Ragtop finished!
Rural Baja - November 16th, 2010 at 11:04 PM

So...
I'm keen to fit a rag to one of my early beetles, is there anyone on here that has done it before?

vw54 - November 17th, 2010 at 05:50 AM

Do u mean a goldie Sunroof or a chop top

I have 2 origional Sunroofs or are you thinking of grafting a roof to a hard top ??? it has been done

vwsteve - November 17th, 2010 at 06:37 AM

i have fitted a couple of original golde clips to bugs, take plenty of time to measure, measure, measure and you will be fine, there are some original stiffening brackets at the front, make sure you keep them attached, helps with lining up also

Rural Baja - November 17th, 2010 at 08:43 PM

I was thinking of grafting a golde style ragtop to the bug. VW54 what have you got exactly?

68AutoBug - November 17th, 2010 at 10:45 PM

so long as You know that when You cut a large hole in the roof of a beetle You lose most of the strength....

You do not lose most of the torsional or beaming strength by fitting a sunroof. I am involved in processing numerous torsional and beaming tests on many different types of vehicles, and the difference in strength between solid roof, and sunroof vehicles is negligible. The fact is that there is a difference, however it is not a difference to worry about. It is certainly not most of the strength.

G'day Mate,

What sort of bug have you got?

EDIT

Yep you bought the cream bug from Hobart :)

OldTimer - December 20th, 2010 at 06:35 PM

Hey Rural Baja.

When you say Wolfsburg, do you mean Wolfsburg West ( http://www.wolfsburgwest.com )? I did a search there and couldn't find Golde Roof Clip - maybe I'm doing something wrong!
Would be interested in doing something like that to my '67 Bug - a clue on price would be good :starhit:

When you get it don't forget to put up your step-by-step progress (including photo's of course).

Good luck, and have a great Christmas.

Bizarre - December 20th, 2010 at 08:44 PM

Reckon he is talking Wolfsburg Automotive Wreckers in Melbourne

OldTimer - December 20th, 2010 at 09:10 PM

Hey Bizarre, do you know if they have a web site?

Gosh I'm lazy, I could just Google them I guess? (Damn this Intraweb!)

[EDIT] - tried Google - nothing!

Rural Baja - December 20th, 2010 at 10:52 PM

G'day!

Yep Wolfsburg Automotive, the new rag canvas is coming from Wolfsburg West as far as i know.

It wasnt cheap, will be looking well over $1000 but i think it will be worth it. Keep an eye out for an update
in early jan!

Cheers Will

OldTimer - December 20th, 2010 at 11:17 PM

So what your saying is . . . you bought a roof section with a bloody great hole in it - ;) (from Wolfsburg Automotive) - your going to whack it onto your ride - (read: carefully weld) - and throw on (carefully place) the new canvas from Wolfsburg West?

Looking foward to the update - should be fun.

Good luck

That's going to look awesome when its done.
All Herbies should have rag tops like the original.
I'm glad you didn't go with the Herbie Goes Bananas look

t_tuffnut - January 20th, 2011 at 09:37 AM

The price of bananas would cripple you in a week!

OldTimer - January 21st, 2011 at 08:46 AM

Looking awesome, can't wait to see the finished product.
I bet it's pretty hard finding a roof section with sunroof in it these days?
But I think I'll keep my eyes open as I think I NEED to have me one of them!

Keep the pictures coming

Rural Baja - January 21st, 2011 at 03:43 PM

Thanks for the comments!

Yea took a little bit to find a Golde roof, just waiting for one of the front hood bows to arrive with the new replacment ragtop. I wont have any pictures until she is back from the upholsters around the start of Febuary. Hopefully ready for the MotorMillions show at Devonport on the 12th! Wish me luck!

OldTimer - January 21st, 2011 at 04:27 PM

Best of luck.

Don't forget to post piccies from the show (especially the ones where you're collecting you prize!)

If you see another Golde clip for sale, give me a yell pronto.

not sure if youve already got started with your rag top but there is a Britax kit currently up on eBay if youre interested, I would love it but it seems like I have the same gearbox expenses coming up as the guy whos selling it!

Rural Baja - February 6th, 2011 at 08:45 AM

Very excited now!

Rural Baja - February 6th, 2011 at 08:55 AM

Rural Baja - February 13th, 2011 at 10:04 PM

Mike - February 18th, 2011 at 09:13 PM

That looks awesome. It really looks like all the hassle you had was worth it in the end.
I'm lucky i checked my Herbie model before I asked a stupid question about the number plates:lol:
