Bought me a Beetle
zeuspig - March 16th, 2011 at 09:31 PM

Have to pick her up yet.

Apparently when she drives it has an oil leak. But when stationary she is fine, looks like it is coming from the back of the gearbox area. Anyone know what this could be.

Here are some picks....

Tnks for the quick response.

He also said the gear lever is quite loose and sloppy.

Checking it all out properly on the weekend. Road trip coming up

ANother ?. What is the go with these chopped converts. When it comes to rego do you need a mod plate in QLD?

If so what has to be done and with the strength side of things do I have to look to see if certain things are done to it?

from what i have been told you can't convert a bug unless you strengthen the pan and body, if no mods have been done i wouldnt recommend you buy it but i'm sure others here will be able to assist you with your request

the gear shifter is an easy fix just the rear coupling, and mid coupling...

Thanks, I am concerned now about that mod plate more than anything

If it was registered in NSW last it wont have a mod plate.

If it hasn't had one you'll just have to get it engineer certified no biggy if its been converted right.

Roll bar looks as though, thats the main area that lets convertables down with engineering.
It has the bracing back to the rear wheel arches, that's a requirement, the only other one it may need is a brace from the rollbar to the windscreen and the main part connects to the chassis bracing.

Alot of badly converted beetles just have the roll bar welded to the body where the B-pillars were cut off, they have to run down to the floor pan bracing.

Thanks mate, I will be asking that question tomorrow before I look as it is a 2 hours drive.

Good stuff.

He sent me these pics today. It doesn't look to me that the roll cage goes all the way down :(

rollbar looks to me to go down to the floor, floor pan bracing is usually a big square chasis type thing underneath the pan ,looks like it has had previous rego ,so that will help i suppose

Wenr and had a look today, drove it out of his shed and had a look under and the ending was pouring out oil, on the left side of the motor was a heap of oil everywhere.

Looks like the motor has had it. Unfortuantely left her there.

Anyone know where a cheap 1300 is?

Paulc1964au - March 20th, 2011 at 07:25 PM

Have you actually bought it? I would suggest taking it to a VW specialist and let them take a look, could be something as a simple rear main seal that needs replacing

zeuspig - March 20th, 2011 at 07:37 PM

Ive got a mate who runs a mechanic shop on the coast and explained what was happening to him and he said it had a cracked case.

Bit of a let down as the lady wanted it pretty bad. But with the extra cost on top I decided to leave it.

Keep looking you will find one

That roll bar is fine, the only mod it will probably need is a bar from the middle across to the windscreen.

You're probably panicking over nothing with the engine.
Cracked cases do happen but aren't that common.
An unknown engine like this warrants tearing down and checking over anyway but good chance its just bad seals, rocker cover, pushrod, oil cooler, crank seal, you name it they all make a mess when they leak.

Pouring out the left side could even just be the rocker cover bail has lost it tension or a rust pin hole in one of the pushrod tubes as well.

That said you'll find a 1300sp to be pretty asthmatic and unexciting.
A 1600 would be a good upgrade.
