Options for a passenger side mirror
Paulc1964au - March 21st, 2011 at 07:31 PM

I would like to install a mirror on the passenger side door (pictured) what options do i have other than mounting on the door hinge?

The drivers side mirror is a standard for a 69 and screws into the door pillar below the quarter window. am i able to drill and tap or is there another way of mounting the mirror to match the drivers side mirror?

Has your drivers door got the plug below the 1/4 window,if so,you can fit the standard mirrors as fitted to most of the later bugs make a template from this and drill the passenger door, remove the trim and fit a thin nut inside to mount the mirror.( to get the nut in is a bit of a task but is worth the trouble)
Sorry misread the picture,I thought it looked like a hinge pin mirror. But the rest of the fitting procedure will be right.

It's only the 72 and later passenger doors that have the mirror mount.

The threaded mount can be fitted to earlier doors but it's a bit of a job, you have to weigh up what's easier, a 72 on door repainted to match or welding in a mount.

I should probably add I've had a stock chrome left side mirror fitted before, they're not that usefull as the only ones you can get are actually drivers side for LHD rather than passenger side for RHD which means the arm is shorter.
Handy for making sure the back gaurd and running board havent fallen off but thats bout it, no good for lane changes.

Is a hinge mounted mirror an option or would it look strange having two different mirrors? Would the hinge mounted give me a better view?

I agree with Joel 100%. My Superbug came with the threaded hole for a passenger mirror, but I have plugged it up with a rubber bung instead because you cannot see anything out of any of the currently available mirrors. You really don't need a mirror on that side anyway, just turn your head and look!

you can get a set of vittoni mirrors,i have them on both side's and they work well, just enough movement on the left one to get a good field of view.

I got the same Vitaloni Californias on mine.

The mirror glass is tiny, the left one is purely there for symmetry cos it's useless and they don't have enough adjustment but they look awesome :tu:

I have a standard passenger side mirror on my bug, but it has the longer arm - it works brilliantly. Wouldn't be without it, especially when backing trailers into tight places or merging left.

Hi Joel
Mine has more than enough adjustment on the left hand side to work well.

It would depend on a lot of things like seating position etc.
I'm used to not even having a left mirror, It didnt have one when I first bought it and neither did most of the bugs I've owned.

It's mainly there for parallel parking.

Jeff, anyone ever tell you you have a nice rack?

That looks like an original mirror on yours.

Mine was probably a cruddy Mexican one, can't even remember where I got it.

For years I didn't have a Left hand mirror, and I remember taking out the plug and installing this one. I think I may have got it from George or Leanne, maybe 10 or 15 years ago?

The rack I would like to get is a steering rack. Thinking VERY seriously about it.
