twoguns - May 3rd, 2011 at 05:27 PM

saw this on ebay... congrats mate.

is this another oval import? or graft? as i see it has no semaphores either!

pmdaniels - May 4th, 2011 at 12:54 AM

I am In Adelaide.
I believe it is an Australian assembled car. Don,t know what you mean by "graft" sorry. Semaphores have been filled in by a previous owner.

twoguns - May 4th, 2011 at 08:04 AM

wow... another beetle with filled in semaphores. :( . been so many lately.

a graft is another term for some body work. fitting a window etc.
i had grafted an oval wondow to a 66 beetle many years back...

twoguns - May 5th, 2011 at 06:35 PM

it could be... i sold it several years back, and i believe it was for sale again. that was a complete rebuild and body work all done by Hairy John Harris.

it would be good to know if its still around.

It's not an oval graft, the windscreen is oval as well. The semaphore's aren't neccessarily filled in either. Not all ovals had semaphores.

twoguns - May 6th, 2011 at 02:35 PM

all australian ovals had sempahores... didnt they? i know US models used splitty blinkers mounted low on teh front guard. i did this on my ol beetle as well...

hey vwmad... if my old ones still for sale, do you have a number? and sorry for any hijack... but hte lack of smepahore does intrigue me just a tad.

This is a 60's Beetle I sold a few years ago, it had a complete oval turret grafted onto it, including the oval windscreen, it was done by a local panel beater in Nowra.

Very nice work Dave. Good point about a whole roof graft, I always (incorrectly) assume most people who did this were only interested in the oval window. I remember seeing heaps of swap meet sellers trying to sell just the oval window cut, back in the nineties. Trust you to go the extra mile

I guess we would need to see some pics of the dash to see if it's a real oval, but there are split beetles out there which have been cut & shut with bits from all sort of beetles it would be hard to tell.

Indeed.
Most people would walk straight past this not realising its a 52 crotch cooler split.

Love those wheels on the blue one above !

Sunset Garage - May 16th, 2011 at 10:51 AM

Looks like you have yourself a pretty nice little oval. The dash is nice, not many holes hacked into it for guages etc.

As has been mentioned in previous posts, you will probably find the pillars have been bogged/welded up where the semaphores used to go, Its also worthwhile checking other panels out like the inside of the front guards (should have metal tubes to house the light wiring from the headlight bucket to body, and/or no evidence of blinker holes welded up. Front and rear valance is unique to early beetles up to 60. Take some pics of them as well & post them if you want to know if they're original oval.

volumex - May 16th, 2011 at 08:13 PM

Nice car.
The rear apron isn't original to the car - a 56 should have the cutouts for the exhaust.
The taillights are sitting high for an Australian bug, but correct for a US bug - which means that if the rear guards are original then semaphores may not have been fitted either. I'd have no idea why a US oval would be over here though??

Pumba - May 16th, 2011 at 08:28 PM

I would say they filled the exhaust cutouts on the rear apron in,if it was a us bug it would be left hand drive???.

pmdaniels - May 17th, 2011 at 01:12 AM

Yes , the exhaust cutouts have been filled in !
I think the tail lights look high because of no bumpers ! Looking for some if anyone can help.
Also need two front seats or suggestions of what seats I could use from another car.

Joel - May 17th, 2011 at 11:22 AM

Pretty obvious the aprons cutouts have been filled
You can see the bog starting to fall out where the the right side cut out has been plated and filled.

The front guards have the tubes for the wiring to the headlight. The rear guards are from a later model, they have the over rider holes welded up.
So it's not all original, after 55 years I wouldn't expect it to be. Does it matter ? Only the Anoraks would notice or care !
I didn't buy it to do an origimal restoration, I just plan on getting it roadworthy and driving it.
This is my second oval the first was about 35 years ago and I've had two sixties beetles since.
I will be flying to Sydney this weekend to check out the cars at the Nationals. See you there !
By the way I am now 61:)

With all due respect to your knowledge, I think you will find the taillights are spot on where they are supposed to be for a set of snowflakes,There is no difference in height from country to country, heart taillghts were lower. Both front and rear valance are correct for the year so all in all it looks very good and solid. I don't know what was paid but it looks extremely easy to restore/hotrod/whatever.

Very good find! Good luck with whatever you want to do with it.

Sweet oval man

pmdaniels - October 28th, 2011 at 07:25 PM

Ok I bought this car with all the good intensions ,but things have changed and I am going to let it go if someone wants it. I paid $3100 for it . I have bought 2 new tyres, a set of hubcaps and some badges. I have had the headlight rims rechromed. There is a new unused adjustable front beam to go with it.Best offer?
