Trick question? or are you meaning the strainer plate in the sump?

Beetles didn't actually have oil filters, but you can fit after market ones though.

ah well okay, you learn something new everyday haha
is it necessary to replace the strainer plate? and where would the aftermarket ones fit? as well as which filters would those be exactly?

Superbugs and all beetles did Not have an oil filter...
they had an oil strainer under the sump plate...
so You will need an oil change gasket kit as You need to take the strainer out, which means You need to take off the 5 cap nuts and take out the strainer and clean it..

I also use permatex gasket cement on My gaskets ..
Make sure You go to a VW SHOP...
Vintage Vee Dub - Classic Vee dub - Classic [George] etc

Get a copy of the VWMA Magazine out now and check out the VW Shops in Sydney who advertise in it...

You can buy a screw on filter kit for Your Super bug ..
it fits over the oil pump on the rear of the engine...
and a spin on oil filter like a Z9 will screw on...

I use castrol GTX 20w/50 WHITE BOTTLE... or GTX 2

engine oil every 3000klms.. Maximum..

Only if it's damaged or disintegrating.
If it's dirty just clean up with kero or petrol and blow it out.

Theres a few different aftermarket ones, but the easiest to fit is just the oil pump mounted style like 90s Mexican beetles had from the factory.
