Today when i headed back to work from lunch,my park was taken by a car.So i parked in a different spot which was slightly on a hill,umm slight slant i should say.Any way thought nothing of it and went to work.this arvo i jumped in my beetle,and straight away was hit with fuel fumes.my tank leaked a few months back,so i thought it might be that.I would check it when i got home.Turned the key and BERRRR dead,like the starter wasnt engaging.or the sound you get when you have a play battery.Just a bit of life but not enough.Tried several times and nothing.Opened the back engine lid.And found horror....there was fuel everywhere.Over the dizzy,leaking from the carby.It was everywhere.It was even dripping off the bottom of the exhaust.it seemed to be gravity feeding from the tank at the front down the back and out of the carby and manifold.I rolled the car back until it was off the slat a bit more and the dripping stopped.My and mate and i then pushed it to flatter ground.After waiting a bit,we found that fuel was in the exhaust i mean in the exhaust.It was dripping out from the joiners in the j-pipes.lol.after a while she started to turn over again.And eventually with splitter and splatters and lots of smoke it started with no fire ball. but ran sick all the way home and wouldnt idle.the only thing i can think of is that the fuel gravity fed back to the pump and straight up the carby,where it slowly leaked into the manifolds.when i held the key over ,i heard like a gurgling noise from the engine.When i went back to the engine bay,i could still slightly hear it coming from what i think is the crankcase. anyway i thought i should share my crazy vw story.for those of you who read all the way through.If you can think of any other reason,Why it would do that.I would love to hear it.

I had something similar happen once. I parked in a steep driveway uphill. Later that evening when I got in the car, and tried to start it, there was just a 'click'. I investigated quickly and a quick think, and trying to roll back out of the driveway made me realise the motor was FULL of fuel. I had to drain about 10 litres of fuel out of the sump, and put new oil in. It started fine. Basically the engine was locked full of fuel. The driveway was steep enough to keep the float in the carby in a position to let the fuel drain from the tank until the motor was full.

I have seen this problem quite often,an inline solenoid operated by the power from the coil cures the problem, this can also be used as an anti theft device if you put a switch in the wiring..

check Your dipstick to see if Your OIL smells like petrol..
IF it does,,,,
Do Not drive with diluted oil in Your engine....

I left My electric pump on once, and fuel was coming out the exhaust and at least one cylinder was full of fuel...
which is why the engine cannot turn over....

there was also petrol in My oil...

I turn My electric pump off automatically now after I turn the key off... lol

thanks guys.what you have mentioned sounds very similar to all the problems i had.But surely this problem would not have been there,when
the car was released from the factory?

What kind of fuel pump do you have?
the original German ones have some sort of valve in them that stops this happening when parked nose up but seems all the shitty brazilian replacements around these days don't do such a thing.

As mentioned earlier you need to replace the oil.

Dont run it until you do.

Oh, and as always if changing oil at home, do the right thing by the environment and drop waste oil off at designated oil recycle/collection centres.

An electric fuel pump won't fix the problem though.

They tend to create more problems than they fix and very few people wire them up properly with a safety cut out so they stop running after an accident.

emptied the oil out today.well the fuel pump which i have is less then twelve months old.So i dont want to rid of it just yet.
Can anyone enlighten me on installing fuel solenoids? where to fit , where to purchase and so on? i think that would be my best bet.
aside from not parking on hills.LOL.

Any LPG place will be able to supply you one.
THey are used in LPG systems to cut off the gas flow when not running.

They have petrol solenoids also, to cut the petrol off when the vehicle is running on LPG. Any place that does LPG repairs or conversions should have parts, experience and be able to help setup a petrol cutout solenoid, via ignition or tachometric relay. It's not hard, you just need the right bits and knowledge.
