1200 exhausts
5lam - September 6th, 2011 at 07:15 PM

Hi all.
Just a quick question that I can't seem to find an answer to.
I just bought a 62 beetle with a 1200 motor. I pick it up Thursday.
In the meantime I've been looking at parts an accessories. I really want to get an exhaust system for it. I like the look of the Phatboy Mufflers, but any exhaust system I've found for beetles say they'll only fit 1300-1600 engines.

So what's the difference in the 1200 & 1300 engines?? Can I modify a set of the merged headers to fit the 1200 or are they completely different??
Can anyone point me in the right direction??

Thanks in advance!
Dave

there is about 14mm difference in the width

A 1600 has a 69 crank and a 1200 has a 64?? crank
So heads are wider

They are available - but no where near as cheap as the mass produced 1600 stuff

So could I cut down a set of 1600 headers?

Most of the extractor sets had a sliding joint that allowed them to be adjusted to suit the 1200 motor,so if this is not the case it should only be a matter of cutting and welding or making a slip joint in the header pipes to suit your engine.

Great!
Thanks guys. I just wanted to be sure so I didn't waste my money.
I might try and get a second hand set of headers and cut them down then :tu::tu:

Showing your age abit there Les ;)

They used to make them like that long time ago but you wont find off the shelf adjustble ones like that these days.

As 1200s died out and parts got harder to get or got replaced with bigger engines, the only people that run 1200s now are the ones that wanna keep them standard so it's a product in very low demand, hence not made much.

Age does catch up with us Joel but we have to keep the brain cells working with a flash of inspiration now and then or they will put us the old peoples home where the only activity is watching the paint peel.I must admit 45 years in the motor trade does take it's toll though that's why us old blokes still tinker and try to pass some knowledge onto the new generation.
Cheers Les

It was meant as a joke.

Alot of what I know about these cars I learned from the owner of the garage I used to work at who was head of the dealership service department here since the early 60s, so I know where you're coming from about passing knowledge on.
I was greatfull to have such a good sensei.

I would have considered upgrading to a 1600TP, but the motor has just been rebuilt with over $2000 spent on it, so it seems silly to ditch it right now!

Joel I knew you meant it in jest and that is how it was taken,I did my apprenticeship at a VW/Rover?Land Rover/Fiat/Citroen/Datsun franchise in the later sixties and the service manager at that time insisted that we learn the whole trade including panel work and electrical, this worked well over the years.Unfortunately the trade has changed a lot over the years.
It is good to see a lot of my generation still on this forum helping where we can. Cheers Les:blush:
