Twin carbs on a single port
10DAK - September 7th, 2011 at 10:20 PM

Just fitted an EMPI twin single carb kit to the beetle. Very happy with the result, but some things to be aware of if you are looking at this mod yourself. They supply absolutely everything in the kit, but it isn't a bolt in deal, well it wasn't for me anyhow. Maybe I'm just fussy. The tinware didn't clear the manifolds where they bolt to the head. I ended up pulling the engine to get a better job done. Reshaped the indent a bit deeper and a bit of clearancing with a die-grinder. I didn't like the idea of drilling the aircleaner for crankcase vacuume, so I made some risers for the aircleaners from SS exhaust tube and put the breather in there. The linkage kit does away with the carb return spring bracket, but then the springs pull at the wrong angle near closed throttle, so I just put a locater on the bracket and fitted them back on. Sooo much more drivable now compared to the original single carb.

It's a lot more drivable, we struggled with the off idle stumble. The original intake manifold had the heat tubes blocked and I left them like that. We come from the monster V8 world ( this our first VW ) where intake heat is the enemy. I'm guessing it requires heat to keep the fuel atomised. The stock, but new, Solex was probably doing it's job, only to be let down by a cold intake. Go easy on me I'm still learning the intricacies of the we little beastie.

I got the kit ( EMPI EPC 34 ) from Vollks here in Oz, I read some negative feedback on some websites, but it seemed to be just peoples opinions, no hard evidence. Apart from the minor fitting issues, it all works fine, we've had it out a couple of times now and it's great. We'll get some more miles on it and get a feel for what's going on and I'll start fine tuning, it's running as delivered and it's pretty good.

That looks fantastic, I am looking at doing the same to my 1500, if you dont mind me asking what was the cost of the kit? Cheers Gary

No I didn't, only because I didn't know about it. It runs fine, but a balanced vacuum signal may make a difference. Any thoughts people????
