WORK TO DO ON MY 1968 1500 beetle
met9 - September 18th, 2011 at 12:00 PM

hi,

i have a 1968 1500 beetle that i am currently doing some work to.

the work involves:

1. sanding back to bare metal and spray painting it (original fawn colour).
2. floor treatment to small amount of rust on the pans, which are not bad to replace.
3. new seats to go in...haven't decided which.
maybe scats in front and re trimming the rears.
4. new wheels and tyres to the existing 4 stud pattern design.
5. new window rubber seals.

luckily......the dub is mechanical almost perfect and strong, so wont be touching that side of it.

anyone who has done any of the above and can give me some insight, will be doing me a favour, as i am relatively new to these cars.

for instance, i am thinking of replacing the original rims with the 14 inch chrome wheels and some nice 205 or 215 x 70 tyres......?? alternatively, i have been told this would be a mistake and to stick to 15 inch chromies ???

what is going to be the difference to this choice?

what's everyone's experience?

cheers

Hi
a lot of work there...

The BIG question mark here... is QUALITY...

there is a LOT of brasillian mexican and chinese parts out there

so, Your new parts may not last long...

some window rubbers only last a year or so in the sun...

so, You need QUality rubbers... USA or German Made..

14 inch chromed wheels ... I had a set and threw them away

First off.. Your speedo will be incorrect with 14 inch rims..

2nd.. Your engine will be revving harder at the same speed as with 15 inch rims..

which is OK if You want to drag race...
but not engine friendly .. and Your top speed will be lower..

14 inch rims were used in the 60s so they would be faster in traffic with small vw 1200 engines

cheers

thanks lee.....i am probably going to go with the 15 inch wheels as i' ve previously had words from people who seem to agree with you.
my intention is to fix all the bodywork and spray it myself, so i' ll be saving there.
.............but its still a lot of work for a relatively low priced classic.
......unfortunately the dubs are not blessed with incredible price tags that come with some of the other classics,
so spending thousands on them is a bit unrealistic....unless off course one likes them.
