Help! - Steering Coupling Bolts
5lam - September 29th, 2011 at 08:43 AM

Hey all! I hope someone can help me!
My steering felt funny on the way home from work yesterday. It would bind up on the column, and the steering wheel would come out about an inch at full lock!
I hopped underneath and had a look when I arrived home, and one of the bolts has dropped out of the steering coupler that bolts to the steering box.

I fixed it temporarily with a smaller bolt I had, but I need to replace it.

Can anyone tell me what bolt, nut and washers are used please, so I can stop off at the bolt shop this avo? It's a 64 Beetle

Thanks in advance!
Dave

Hi

the bolts in My 68 beetle are:

8MM X 30 MM LONG

You could also use 8mm x 35mm long

I believe Yours would be similar

also use NYLOC nuts so they won't undo or fall out

cheers

Thanks 68AutoBug!
There aren't any special washers or spacers through the rubber coupling is there?

They have lock washers on them. washer under the bolt head and lock washer on the nut side.

Just removed mine a couple of days ago.

just a flat washer usually..

many had split or castellated nuts with a split pin thru them
originally but a nyloc locking nut won't come loose..

make sure they are high tensile bolts..
with nyloc nuts,,
