Myrtle restoration - gearbox question.
Before I took her off the road to restore she used to pop out of gear quite a bit.
I have the original gear box, but i also have a spare one. I know the spare functions but no idea whether it pops out of gear. Now i have to decide
which to put back in myrtle, the old or the spare.
My question is how common is it that they pop out of gear?
If its every one in 1000 then i'll take my chances with the spare. IS there anyway i can find out without putting it under load and all back
together to only find out I should have put the original in?
Any help or opinion is always welcome.
Just got visions of finally finishing her, all back together to only have to remove the engine again to replace the gear box..........not sure i could
take that! lol Its been a long resto x
Thanks
Hi Kaz, it is very common for VW boxes hat are 40 years old to pop out of gear due to various worn parts.
So,me times broken mounts or shift linkages are the cause, but likely i is he box.
Gearbox work can be expensive but not as much as engines.
For this reason, if you have time,
you may like to try your used gearbox before spending the dollars to have a full correct rebuild done.
For swingaxles like yours to be rebuilt with quality German parts could be as much as $2000,
but some retailers sell imported rebuilt boxes that have chinese bearings and only replace the minimum,
for a lot less.
Wow......certainly don't have 2K to fix it! I'll try the spare first and if that has similar probs then i'll start saving the money and in the
meantime enjoy driving while holding it in gear lol x
Thanks for the response x
mine was doing that was just the mounts!!!! and a badly adjusted bowden tube!!!!
