Gearbox Options
Sbug 71 - November 3rd, 2011 at 08:00 PM

Hi Dubbers,

I broke fourth gear today and was wondering what my options are for a sturdier gearbox. My bug's a daily driver with a reasonably equipped 1916 in it. Since I've only had the 1916 in it since about June this year I was thinking that this may become a common occurrence and thought that maybe the stock gearbox isn't up to it. What are your thoughts and experiences.

Yeah. It was pulled down earlier this year and had some synchros replaced. I've been told that third and fourth are particularly fine gears in these and can break quite often. I've been quoted $1000 to $1500 to fix it if I remove it from the car. I really want to make sure I get it right this time so that I don't have to pull it out again. I just saw the ones from Classic Veedub and they seem to be priced ok but has anyone used these or any other one you can buy off the shelf?
