Big Master cylinder
aussie260z - January 19th, 2012 at 07:01 PM

Hey guys was wondering if anyone knew of a bigger MS sold in Australia for a 1300 1974 bug?

I am running from discs and converting to rear discs aswell.

I bought one from the US with (I think) about a 22mm bore - but everything is on the wrong side - brakes will foul on the trans tunnel.

I can get around this easy enough by cutting and welding myself some clearance - but before I did I thought I would check what other folks have done as there must be a lot of folks out there rubbings discs front and back and have dealt with this issue with restoring to the welder :-)!

And.........do I need a bigger MS or can I just run my old MS?

What about one from England?

Plenty of us are running 4 wheel discs on the stock M/C

I got a 4 wheel drum 1300 same as yours laying around somewhere but from memory they are same bore size as disc.

From what I remember, the standard dual master cylinder works fine.

Yeah, I will google Pom VW sites and see what they have.

Well if other folk are running the stock MS I am sure I will be fine then - just annoying......did not think they would change the castings for LHD, just have all MS's clear for L & RHD.

Tedious alright :-)!

You can buy new ones from the suppliers here in Oz as well.

Bay window Kombi M/C works well. It's a 23mm bore which is 15/16".

Some bolt pattern and only needs a slight mod to fit. This is what I'm going to be fitting to my Baja when I fit Commodore discs front and rear.

Cool Yogie - who?

Sweet with the Bay Window - take it I just need to re-organise my brake lines a little bit and I am away?

If you increase the size of the master cylinder the force required at the pedal will increase by quite a large amount,I think the legal requirement is about 45KG, a increase from 19MM to 23MM will increase the piston size substantially, i run four spot front calipers with ford rear calipers with the standard master cylinder and have a good pedal and bias

I bought mine from the VW & Volvo centre years ago in Brisbane. I would look up Vintage Vee Dub or one of the other shops that sponsor the site as I would expect they should all have them.

Vollks advertise a Master Cylinder that is a larger bore for Beetles running 4 wheel disc brakes? I have not bought one or know how or if it works, maybe you can do some more investigation and let us know how it works. I have purchased a 4 Wheel disc set up and was looking to run a vacuum Boosted sytem with a remote booster?

Cheers,

David
