DylanTheDubber - February 15th, 2012 at 12:10 PM

Question is will these 8" wheels tuck under my gaurds of my beetle, they are stock width Lbug guards?

The Car has been lowered and tyres are 225/65/R14"

Any pics or info plz post bellow!

you will have a hard time getting 8 inches regoed as the max for a bug with out an engineers for it is 7.
also there not pics of the rims you want to fit

DylanTheDubber - February 15th, 2012 at 04:20 PM

They are widened 14" bug steelies and i have stocks i will be running for rego.

mate its not really worth doing it that way. all it takes is to be caught with the illegal rims on then its back for a defect clearance. sure it sounds easy just change them over get it cleared put the others back on. get multiple defect notices for the same thing and they will then want to come out and inspect the car and they are relentless. ive heard from rta employees stories of them camping out the front of peoples places to get the car.
mind you, by doing this you also put the person who does your rego and defect clearance under scrutiny which may cost them their license and a 15000 fine.
also if you plan on doing it i wouldnt go advertising it on a public forum. the rta does have a department that searches forums for boasting about illegal mods.

DylanTheDubber - February 15th, 2012 at 05:07 PM

Ok well thanks for the info.

Craig Torrens - February 15th, 2012 at 05:10 PM

It depends on the offset of the rim Dylan.......I have 7inch under standard guards, so with the right offset i'm sure you could fit 8's.:tu:

Hi

Unless the RTA has changed things again a pre 73 car is allowed to run wheel sizes based on the finished weight of the car. ie 1001 - 1200 kgs 8s are allowed.

I've seen 17x9s on the back of a 1303

Steve

Joel - February 15th, 2012 at 07:09 PM

Problem with that is stock weight of an Sbug is only 840kg.

You're not gonna get it over a tonne for the sake of fitting 1" wider wheels.

Mine only just hit 1004kg with Subaru conversion, A/C and 50+kg of audio gear.
Not to mention a full tank of fuel and my tools in the boot

Lachlan VL - February 16th, 2012 at 12:00 AM

im screwed then im running 10inch on my back

vwo60 - February 16th, 2012 at 06:02 AM

This is a 8.5" x 17' on the rear of my convertable

What offset are you running on those 8.5's vw060?

vwo60 - February 17th, 2012 at 06:40 AM

ET 48, fitted with a 255 tyre, a 235 would be a better fit under the standard guard.

BiX - February 17th, 2012 at 02:58 PM

I have 7x15 inch steelies under the rear of mine. They are custom made offset and fit just with 205 semi's (which actually measures wider than a street tire). Also you ned to turn your spring plate bolts around to the head is on the outside to give more room.

if they were watching public forums for this sort of thing then 80% of cars posted would be defected from the first day they rolled, just spoke to my sister whom works for vic roads and she is calling your statement bollacks, they dont have the manpower or time to be watching forums and if they did how many car mod forums are out there?

barls - February 18th, 2012 at 12:38 PM

believe what you want, i heard it straight from a rta employee. i did not even mention vic roads.

just to be clear
the first rule of doing something illegal is dont tell anyone.
the second is dont get caught.

dragsters for life - February 19th, 2012 at 09:02 AM

and please dont take my statements personal, i can be quite blunt at times but i mean no harm and are typing with a smile

SebastienPeek - February 19th, 2012 at 10:30 AM

I agree, most VW's that are on the road are defectable in more ways than one.
I've seen bugs without bumpers. I've got a bug that doesn't have a horn or reverse lights.

Imagine if exhaust notes were defectable on a beetle, or any old VW, I can guarantee that every single one would be impounded.
I doubt wider wheels aren't common either. I know I'll be going 17x8's all around if I can.
I'd love to fit 17x9's or even 10's on the rear.

That would be mad.

Lachlan VL - February 19th, 2012 at 01:41 PM

ive got 10 inch on the rear the way it handles is unbelievable

SebastienPeek - February 19th, 2012 at 01:59 PM

Yeah, I'm thinking 10's on the rear too, what'd you have to do to get them to fit Lachlan?

DylanTheDubber - February 19th, 2012 at 05:21 PM

Lauchlan has widened gaurds all round not sure but think they are fiberglass widened ones but not flared. Im going to roll/ lip my guards on the rear and try get them to fit 8" on the Rear.

From Dylan

SebastienPeek - February 19th, 2012 at 06:08 PM

Hmm, I reckon I could get 8's or 9's on the rear without rolling or widening guards.

DylanTheDubber - February 19th, 2012 at 06:10 PM

Yeah its all about the offset and mine are a very deep dish offset so high percentage of the rim is on the outah side rather than inner or even.

From Dylan

SebastienPeek - February 19th, 2012 at 06:15 PM

Yep!

Offset is everything. Have been talking to a lot of people in the "poke" community and they're keen to see a bug with some poke so I've been looking into it a lot.
Swapping to a 5x114.3 bolt pattern and then we'll get some decent rims on her. Shall be good!

But yeah, I reckon you'd be fine getting 8's on easily.

And they are all usually like that for years without any hassles.

The problem arises when you are involved in an accident.
Even if you are not at fault your car will be gone over with a fine tooth comb and soon as insurance companies find out about any illegal mods they will wipe you like a dirty arse.

They love taking your money but do their best to get out of giving it back and they have people well trained to deal with that kinda stuff.

Not much fun if you have caused $40,000 damage to the Merc you ran into and they totally wipe you.

Lachlan VL - February 19th, 2012 at 10:16 PM

yep mine are widened fiberglass gaurds but the look stock i recon u could fit 10 inch under but my off set had my rims rubbing on my bump stops

BiX - February 21st, 2012 at 10:02 PM

are you guys considering the 8 inch and 10 inch wheels (and tires) from a performance point of view? or for looks only?

yes some cars have very wide rears, normally also have very high hp.

A narrower tire may perform far better on a beetle (not saying going back to 165's, but a 205 or a 215). It increaes the contact pressure on the tread per unit area, warms up quicker and also handles chamber differences in the road better. Even rim width compared to tire width has a considerable effect on handling. I am actually thinking of going down from a 7 inch to a 6 inch on the back of my super. The 7 inch, doesn't let the tire deform and provides a more sudden slide when cornering compared to the same tire on a 6 inch rim. I think full Noise has found the same issue on his oval.

But if you after looks, go as wide as you want and enjoy

Lachlan VL - February 22nd, 2012 at 02:10 PM

this is wat my 10 inch looks like under my guard yes widened guards

SebastienPeek - February 22nd, 2012 at 02:31 PM

Lachlan,
That looks perfect. Where did you get the widened fibreglass fenders from?
:)
