I have a haynes and an official bug service manual .. they have diagrams in them. they didn't cost much either. can't remember the site i got them from. easy enough to get though :)

are the H4 lights really bright? i've still got the glass lenses in mine and definately need something brighter. i can hardly see anything at night :( and the stupid roadworks on the ipswich motorway can be a bit dodgy, especially in the rain.

Australian Beetles do not have sealed beams.

Thankyou barls,
What dobthey have then? Semi sealed?

Sealed beams were only used on North American VWs.
Aus got the European non sealed asymetrical headlight (on right) till 74 then 75 on had the semi-sealed (on left).

A few people over the years have fitted old holden and such sealed beams to VWs but trouble is they don;t have parker lights in them.

You can fit some universal mounting buckets then buy headlight inserts on ebay if you like which is what I did as I wanted the new style crystal prism headlights like modern cars have but the easiest bolt in solution is just by a semi sealed H4 setup from any VW shop.

one of my vw mags has a listing for "prismatic headlights" at mick motors .. you could check that out?

Thanks guys,
Have found a universal bucket insert for sale at vintage....
Now to choose which lights I want....
Hella sealed or semi sealed? Leaning towards the semi sealed for ease.of bulb replacement

Forget sealed beams.
They are made to be thrown out when one of the filaments blows so they don't exactly go all out with the quality.

Semi sealed with some good bulbs like Narva Plus50 and relays will give you excellent headlights.

hey joel thanks alot for the advice....
wheres the best place to buy the insert and the light do you reckon.... the insert says unavalible at vintage..... sorry for the questions first time ive done such a thing !

Depends what style you're after.

I like the crystal prism style lenses but the guy I got mine through also does the normal style with a fluted lense that looks like stock ones

You can get them in flat lense like 75 onwards beetles have

Or curved lense like 74 and earlier.

Will go curved I reckon, keep her looking stock!
