Hey people I have just recently completed an engine upgrade to the wifes '70 Beetle. It has obviously always had a soft rear end..The splines have been reset and sits nicely on standard torsion bars..problem is Im looking to firm up the ride as the rear stock shocks are knackered..
Does anyone have recommendations on rear shock upgrades?..Has anyone used the Empi Coilover shocks for type 1?
..Looking for a direct fit rear shock..something like Bilsteins,Koni,Spax and the like. Either as an adjustable shock or coilover shock setup..Part numbers and where to buy from would be helpful too..thanks in advance Jason.

Naturally You will want to do something if the shocks are worn out.
normal are heavy duty oil shocks...

You could go to gas shocks...
but some are hard as a rock...!!

I've always used heavy duty oil shocks on the rear...

and oil shocks on the front but I came across a set of gas monroe shocks on a beetle My Son was wrecking...
and found one of My front shocks was worn out so I put those on... thinking they would make the front just too hard...
and best front shocks I've had...

I think normal heavy duty oil or gas shocks on the rear, will be great , after driving with worn out shocks....
there will be a BIG difference...

and if it is Your Wife's car then I don't think She will appreciate a hard as a rock rear end... thumping over every bump..

Naturally, EXPENSIVE , Spax, Koni or Bilstein should be much better.... but I'll bet Your Wife won;t know the difference.

and Yes the 68-70 beetles are known for soft rear torsion bars..
