Hey guys i have recently purchased a vw beetle and the rego papers say it's a 1962 but everyone i have shown it to says it's not. the plate has worn away but it says ' volkswagen Australia pty ltd, chassis no. ........ weight lbs. 2459 and then some of the writing is missing then axle no. lbs 992 rear lbs 147. The vin number on the rego form is 00002469. can anyone help?

Ha, gotta love the clueless motor registry, they've used the weight as the chassis number lol.

It's hard to date exactly from outside because of the carrera kit but it's between 61 and 67.
The carrera gaurds with late headlights are probably fooling some people.

have a look under the backseat at the chassis number and get back to us

ok will do thanks :)

no plate anywhere in the rear

It isn't a plate, its just the numbers stamped into the metal so you may have to clean off 5 decades of grease, grime and paint to see it.

It's just in front of the inspection plate for the gearshift coupler.

yep as Joel says..
so get scrubbing it will be there :)

Yes, as Joel has said

Your beetle has the early body with smaller windows and windscreen which were used in Australia up to 1968.
The front headlamps are off a 68>-76 model..
so the front mudguards are off a later model.

the chassis [vin no] may start 192XXXXXXX

meaning its an Australian build in 1962..

The 19X Aussie chassis number system was only used from 65 to 67.

64 and earlier use the usual German numbering system but there was a bit of a delay between German production and Aus so they are a rough guide only.

Today we found the chassy number, it is located in the front of the car where the spare wheel is located the chassy no is 5425465. Type 2. Axle front 992. Rear wheel bass 1477. If anyone could tell me the actual year it would be appreciated as i have had many people tell me it is not a 62 beetle as stated on the registration form.

Cheers,

Peter

It would be late 63 early 64.

Aus production was slower than German so the any chassis dating guides you find are only rough guide only

hey guys what is a suitable price for front and drivers seats? i found a pair in average condition for 350 but i think its a bit rich for the condition they are in.

MISS VDUB - May 12th, 2012 at 09:14 PM

Hmmmm, if they are only average condition I would keep looking ;)

peter87 - May 14th, 2012 at 09:57 PM

Hey guys, i have a carer kit that i'm posting online for sale what is a reasonable price it includes front and rear bumpers, side skirts, rear wheel arches with torana tail lights, and spoiler. It's in reasonable condition has no cracks or scratches.

MISS VDUB - May 14th, 2012 at 10:07 PM

Unfortunately they don't fetch much these days as a whole kits, but often there are people looking for a particular section. I'm pretty sure there is someone here chasing just the side skirts. It's one of those things that you will get what someone is willing to pay for it. Put what you would ideally want or best offer?

helbus - May 14th, 2012 at 10:28 PM

Maybe $300 or possibly $400.

peter87 - May 14th, 2012 at 11:31 PM

i was thinking around 300, they are in pretty good condition. I do have the flared front guards but I'm using them as i couldn't find any guards to fit my beetle. Also have a set of front guards to suit a 71 super if anyone is interested.

cheers,

Pete
