Best Oil To Use on Stock 1600cc 1974 L bug?

Doing a service on a friends bug and want to know what would be the best oil to use on a stock 1600cc TP Superbug 1974 model. Want something redilly avalible from Auto Bahn or supercheap.

I used to use penrite hpr 30 on my old 1916.... It actually slowed my oil leaks dramatically. I use something else on my drag engine.

Is Royal purple synthetic? I remember back in the 90's the rotary boyz used it.
