peter87 - November 9th, 2012 at 10:03 PM

Hi guys, we recently purchased a 71 beetle in average condition with the usual rust spots. in the last 6 months we have had a few problems;

- fuel gauge doesn't work
- leaks oil like crazy
- gear shift slips out of reverse

If any one has any idea how to fix the problems could you please post a reply. :)

here are some pics of 'Tractor' our 71 beetle

Hi Peter87

1. fuel gauge. Remove the wire that connects to the sender and earth it on the body somewhere with the ignition on.
If the gauge reads full, sender faulty. If still doesn't work could be faulty fuse, wiring or gauge.
2. The worst case scenario is the crankcase is cracked. Not so bad it could be crankshaft or oil cooler seals.
3. If it is jumping out of reverse there is nothing that will fix it without an overhaul.
Cheers Dave

degrease the motor and try and pin down where it is leaking

As said - could be real easy or real hard
