Hey guys.
Looking at buying my 1st bus, its a '72 lowlight pick up.
Haven't seen it in person yet but its supposed to be rust free with a reco'd engine and been sitting for 5yrs. He wants $1000 for it.
Is that one of those 'can't go wrong' buys?
Cheers.
sounds like a good buy , the engine alone would be worth that if it is what they are saying it is
Are they a 1600?

They're like elbows mate - everybody's got one. If greedy doesn't take it I will... that's two brothers looking out for you now!
But seriously if it is in fact rust free then buy it. However even a reco motor that has been sitting for that long may need some love.
Wicked - wish I could stumble across a $1000 sc.
to good to be true???? check for RUSt!
a 72 is a special beast as these were only made in 72 they have the lowlite front and a high rear and they can be fitted with any engine 1600 1800 2 lit so good luck with the buying experdition
So I checked it out today.
Bit of surface rust on the roof and around the edges and a little under the rubber on the floor. No holes or anything though. Inside the wheel arches,
treasure chest and engine bay it looked brand new.
I was able to turn the engine over by hand by turnnig the pulley, is that normal? I couldn't feel much compression. Its supposedly only got 1500kms
on the engine. Had plenty of (very black) oil in it.
Tyres are cactus, interior was pretty sun damaged, esp drivers seat and all the rubber/plastic.
Probably all the rubbers throught the whole car are gonna be shagged, ie hoses and seals for the brakes and clutch? Are they hydraulic clutch?
I reckon I should try and get it running before I agree to buy it. If the motors stuffed is it still worth it?
I'll try and post some pics later.
All SC's will have some of these issues as they were work utes after all and you seem to understand what they are.
At a $1000 it is a pretty good buy
My tip would be to get it checked out by a VW mechanic and get all the mechanicals right.
Best of luck with it.
But should I be able to turn the engine over easily by hand? There was no compression to be felt. I'm guessing that means the engine is screwed. Getting a mechanic to look at it is not really an option. Its on a farm out of town and obviously isn't running.
Yes. You can turn the motor over by hand. I can't judge how easy it was for you, but you can do it. No matter what, if it's rust free, it's a good buy. I'll be the third brother if you pass on it. Sounds like a nice ratty ride.
well did ya get it dont leave us hanging with money in our pockets

Man beg, borrow or steal the money and go and secure it NOW!
The gates in that condition are worth $1000 alone!
Bugger selling the datsun if you want this SC make it happen!
It is not safe now people can see it is a bargain
its worth twice that without an engine, grab it
looks bloody strait, was it used to deliver pillows?
Navigator,Whats your location ?.Ill give you a $1000 for the gates and my old gates. Then you can keep the Datto

Nice looking single cab, doesn't look like it would take much to get it on the road. Buy it, and make them all Jealous ! Good luck with the purchase.
being a fellow learner dubber you should pm me where it is so i can buy it and make them all jealous, the gates will do me
so...did you end up buying it Nav?
Not yet!
Got someone coming to look at the datto today though. Hopefully they turn up.
The owner of the kombi doesn't seem to be in a rush so I'm lucky there.
Can't wait to get it though. Plan is just to lower it (lots) and put some rims on it. Maybe retrim the seats and door cards.
ii will take it all just for parts of cause honest
well did the dream come true?????do you own it yet??????
