We found a kombi 75 for sale, the body is full of rust but straight and it has a 2litre in it.My question is can we rip the gearbox and 2liter engine
out and bolt it straight into our 72 Lowlight removing the current 1600 engine? Can that be done and is it hard?
Thanks
Have a good one.
Should be able to into a 72. what i am to beleiveis the 72 has the bigger engine bay
yeh it is quite wide.Any other info needed
yea 72 was the first year of the type4 engine bay so should be a straight swap
You will need to shorten the gearshift linkage at the front by about 10mm so you can select all the gears. The 2L box is longer than the 1600

Are the 2L gearbox's any better, like better gearing and stuff?
2.0 l engine needs the gearing of the 2.0 l gearbox, assuming tyres are still the same as stock diameter. Also need the bell housing to fit in the clutch that is bigger than all the rest.
The "2 litre" 091 has similar gearing to the "1600" 002, really only differing only in the final drive ratio.
,ok,should we should be good to just swap the running gear over then.wont have to change mounts or nothing like that?
i have just finished that fit up i have a 72 ute and a 76 2 lit and gear box it's a straight swap cut nothing or move anything ,the 72 is a special
beast it has a wider undercarrage and is 4 inches longer ,it can fit any engine that vw make from the 1600 1800 and 2 lit,and just to add a bit of
go0ld the 2.1 water pumper will go straight in also
so have fun
