Hey Everyone.
A new kombi has been added to the family.but it has no compliance plate behind the seat and has no engine.Is there another code i can find to find out what it is.It is a baywindow but with small back lights and looks quite smaller and lower compared to normal.Im so excited to find out.

look for a chassis number in the engine bay put it up and well let you know
it will probably be a 68-71

the engine bay is a removable one.so there is no actual tin ware left where they normally stamp the number.
is that the same one you are thinking of.
i will go have another look,but i didnt see one this arvo.

My beetle doesnt have a compliance plate
It was taken off in a spray job in Canberra
When i bought the car i had to re register it for NSW
they were going to make me get some UUIV test or something to proove it was a 75 beetle
Ih the end they said - whatever just hand over the folding stuff

yeh i know,i had a good look this arvo for it but coudnt see anything.
its kinda hard when your just looking everywhere and not in a particular
area.i really like the look of it,its real rounded and short, the chrome looks
different too.kinda classic looking.i cant remember but i think its a lowlight.

Check the panel below the fuel tank, left hand side, it maybe faint especially if its been painted a few times.

I think silver is right,from memory the chassis no is a fairly light stamping

the chasiss number is on the right hand side infront the battery tray.Its on a triangle shaped panel ,right were the engine hatch hinge bracket is connected to the chassis.
Also compliance plates werent compulsary until around august 1972 roughly.So there wont be any behind the seats.

Lowlight Bay - 1968 - 1972, almost always 1600 Type 1 engine.

just went and had a look and cant find a single number.
not one that jumps out at me anyway.anyone got a photo of where it could be located.
i looked everywhere suggested.

"Highlight" Bay, 1973 - 1979, some with 1600 Type 1 engine, most with 1700, 1800 or 2000 Type IV engine.

Notice the placement of the indicators; they also have larger taillights.

My 71 low-light has a chassis number directly adjacent to the battery in the engine bay to a slightly raised section that is angled towards the engine bay. Mine also has the chassic number on a plate to the angled strengthening bar near where the engine hatch support if fitted.

These are 2 different numbers, yet the same 2 numbers are on my compliance plate behind the drivers seat. The main chassis number used by the RTA is the one stamped on the slightly raised panel. They are difficult to see as the stampings are very light.

Mine is an Aussie CKD vehicle.

There are a number of sublte changes to the early bays that can give away some of the ages.

1968 has a slightly different hole pattern for the bolts that hold the front beam onto the chassis as compared to the later models - these holes match the splitty pattern and hence why they have been dwindled down to near extinction.

1968 - 1970 - all have 4 wheel wide 5 stud pattern drum brakes std. Usually they have a single port 1600 donk (if the donk is standard) - this will be obvious by the inlet manifold (from the carby to the heads of the motor).
All have the low front indicators and the small (late splitty style) rear tail lights. They also all have the half moon curved air intakes as opposed to the late square ones.

1971 - changed the rear wheel track and have flared rear gaurds. Also 71 saw the small 5 stud wheels with std front disc brakes and a brake booster. Front and rear indicators/tail lights remained the same as the early models.
1971 also have an extra front chassis member which angles from the main chassis to the front corner of the kombi.

1972 - (Last of the low-lights) have the low-light front and rounded bumpers (same as the early ones) yet the front arches are now higher and flared, the rear end is wider with the rear apron now fixed, the intake vents are larger and squarer and the rear tail lights match the late bays & now have reverse lights for the first time in OZ.
the 72's and on have an optional type 4 engine 1700 -2000cc yet can still have the 1600TP.

my lowlite had the number stamped into the panal just infront of the battery not in the tray beside it in the engine bay fearly big numbers but took a while to find
