Thats rediculous isnt it? What hope does he have of restoring a car with any base of strength... Good luck each to their own

rossdanialnaumov - February 17th, 2011 at 03:08 PM

It's ridiculous but way cool! Thumbs up for dedication!

benjicon - February 17th, 2011 at 03:18 PM

How much of the car would be salvageable ? Is there any point ?

68AutoBug - February 17th, 2011 at 03:59 PM

I think it would be easier to make one from sheet metal???

or spare parts..

Can't say anything on it is good....!!!

unless he is going to reuse the brake springs.... lol

Cant really comment on its condition from those photos, good find

dogo - February 17th, 2011 at 11:59 PM

Ive seen worse repaired. At least any bog would be noticably swallon. Pity more care wasn't taken to spead the sling to avoid damage.
23 window submarine...Thats COOL!

now that would be one wicked rat

Joel - February 18th, 2011 at 12:05 PM

There's a thread on the samba somewhere about the worst splits being restored.

Nearly everything in it make this one look in mint condition.

These ones are good examples of the projects people are taking on.

How would you even know where to start

I've seen pictures of that blue one back on the road!

Amazing workmanship and vision really...

That bottom one, I'm not sure that's salvageable!

Joel - February 18th, 2011 at 03:25 PM

Any sane person would agree with you but for those with more dollars than sense that desperately want a barndoor 23 window samba thats how they roll.

Gerson's make almost every panel for splitties now that you can pretty much build one from scratch.

I've watched my good mate Don rebuilding splits not quite that bad but almost turned to dust using Gersons panels.

rossdanialnaumov - February 18th, 2011 at 03:59 PM

* Gerson * Good fit, good quality?

helbus - February 18th, 2011 at 06:08 PM

They are like the cars we restore at my work.

Volksy85 - March 17th, 2011 at 05:27 PM

IMO its a very fine line between 'restoring' and 'building a brand new van with replacement parts'.

where do you draw the line? ive seen 'restos' where little more than the build plate was retained :D

SlownLow - May 26th, 2011 at 11:52 PM

i think this shows the quality of a humble volkswagen kombi. to last that long under water

rossdanialnaumov - May 28th, 2011 at 07:08 AM

Yes Volksy85 but I think the initial intention is there - to restore a basket case. Either way, it's a massive job.

I started cutting the rust of my lowlight cab, when I started cutting out the areas of concern there wasn't much original metal left by time I'd finished. Complete front floor, front inner and out valiance, both A pillars, windscreen surround, doglegs, and many other bits and pieces. Allot of these were new replacement parts as OG parts were't available.

I think that's part of the fun :))

live2surf - July 7th, 2011 at 03:27 PM

Whoa, looks like vw roadkill! :(
