chellejohno - February 23rd, 2011 at 07:56 PM

hi guys,
i need to replace my steering box real soon, whats the best way to go?
Are they available new? What are reco ones like and where do i get one.
i noticed wayne penrose has got a new genuine one at $1100, are they worth that sort of money? wasn't planning on tripling the value of my bus by replacing the box!

any help would be appreciated.
cheers johno

first make sure it's the box, i have just had the drag replaced link and what a bloody great fix, also filled the box with bearing grease just take the nippel end of poke it in the filler hole and pump it will displace the oil if any out

So You have a KOMBI - Bus... ??

steering boxes got more expensive as they were changed on later models..

I'm sure You can pick up a good used one

they do have adjusters on steering boxes.....

Your tie rod ends NOT worn???

LEE

Have You adjusted the box???

Thanks for all the advice guys, i've just sourced one from vw heritage in the UK. a new one for about $590 delivered. Fitted it along with new draglink and pivot pin, i can actually take one hand safely off the steering wheel now! i cant believe the difference. these guys were great to deal with, paid for it on Thursday, arrived at my place Tuesday morning.
cheers Johno
