Can anyone tell me the colour of this bus?
rossdanialnaumov - April 3rd, 2011 at 11:50 AM

Hi,

I have a 1970 lowlight this colour that i'm re-painting. Can anyone tell me the original colour name of this light blue please?

Note: This is not my car. I am just using it as an example.

Thank you.

There was a 68-69 colour here which may have still been around in 70 called Diamond blue (L50B)

think it was used overseas too, looks like that

Yes this looks like it! I am finding it difficult to find the correct colour when i research colours charts for kombi's circa 1970 i can't seem to find this light blue.

I have attached an image of under my dash which shows the original paint. It does look like Diamond blue (L50B)

It's very rare to see a low light in that colour, see plenty of them in Regatta blue which has a hint of green in it but not so much diamond blue.

Yup thats it, I know the colour well, best mates 68 bug was the same colour for the first 6 or so years they owned it.

Arh great!! Thank you!

Mines (supposedly) a 1970 - so what you're saying is it could well be a late 69 model?

* I don't have the car here so i can't check the compliance.

My first thought was Flipper Blue.

Yes, the fact this car predates flipper blue by 3+ years and low-lights were never painted that colour is just a minor technicality

Hey Joel, not being picky (maybe i am) but I'm pretty sure (Actually I'm positive) that the 68 Beetle in your bottom photo is actually Zenith Blue, which is a fully imported colour only from Aug 66 to August 68. VW Australian 69' Beetles had Flipper Blue, but any fully imported 69's which may have trickled in at the end, and after August 68 (69 Model year, Bonnet pull in the glovebox) Before Clayton retooled, would be Diamond blue, Which was introduced in Aug 68.

Flipper blue is an Australian colour, so that picture of the overseas lowlight is definitely Diamond Blue, and you are completely, 100% correct. But no 68 model year Beetle (Aug 67-Aug 68) Was ever Diamond blue.

For the record it's easy to tell the subtle differences between them all, when you have mixed and matched these three colours over and over again.

I ended up buying Diamond Blue and painted my floor and interior (sorry no pics yet) and it seemed to match up to behind the dash well - no visible difference anyway - see my top pic i posted. I'm going with Joel and say my lowlight was originally painted Diamond Blue.
