Engine number is at the base of the breather box, just behind the fan housing. The same number should also be stamped on the fan housing next to the
coil mounting point, but they will not match if the fan housing has been replaced.
Chassis number is on the body just inside the engine bay door, left hand side as you said.
Wide 5 stud pattern kombi's never had the type 4 motor though, so yours may have been modified. It's not a neat fit if it has been done as the type
4 motor is longer and the rear panel needs modifying.
Thank you for the advise, I found the engine number below the breater box,
It does not match the fan shroud though. Engine CA 040945 Fan shroud is AP 026878
I have a John Muir vw book which says that the engine and bus are dec 73 to august 74 1700cc
It has twin 32 34 solex carbs on it and it's an auto transmission
I ask about the Wide 5 disks as I am considering using the type 4 engine and entire rear of the bus in my Baja
rather than a late model water cooled engine upgrade that I was going to do
and I would like to keep the wide 5 style rims on it , so I would like a rear disk conversion (if at all possible)
Are the later buses the same stub axle diameter and spline as the earlier wide 5 kombi's
I also have a country buggy front end to bolt in which is wide 5
cheers jade
Can't help on those questions Jade. Some one else might know?
