Just out of interest, who has an early bay Type 216 (left and right sliding doors) commercial van on the road or close to it?
Or who knows of any?.. I was talking this subject the other day with a very experienced VW collector and we couldn't remember the last time we had
seen one..
I knew of one in Five Dock that went to the crushers a year or two ago (it was a basket case) and I have one.. But does anyone know of any others out
there?
Just interested more than anything..
Cheers Rob
What about this one that was on ebay recently - all the body restored but not reassembled and with no motor:

It looks great but a heap of work to completely put back together and get on the road registered.
scottkombi, that link you posted is stenguns panel, build thread is on aussieveedubbers too. Nice van to add to the collection, but missus said NO MORE. The panel van will be awesome once someone puts it on the road again.
I have found 3 possible on the lowlight forum.. None restored..
I'm starting to think mine is a bit rarer than I first thought.. (Well mine for another 24 hours until the sale is complete)

There was a twin sliding door panel van getting about my area a few years ago, 72 model on west aus number plates. I think it was a green colour,
might have had some type of graphics on it as well, cant really remember. Was rather tatty looking, dont know what happened to it.
Alex.
I am parting one out, its a '71 low light, windows cut into both doors, call me if you need anything.

Also saw one at a clearing sale out west last month, wasn't too bad either, it was a '68 and still a panel too, photos below.
Dont know how many are still around but here are some local factory production numbers showing how many were built down in Melbourne when the factory
was working.
Up to December 1968 1184 UNITS (Splitty)
with the last two Splitties leaving the factory in November 1968
216 216
011 M code
1968 35 Low light Bay
1969 108 71
1970 36 13
1971 47 21
1972 37 38
1973 48 48
Total 311 191
With a total of 502 Bays produced there cannot be many still around.

Scott, Some one bought it, wasn't a bad van but had a lot of bog in it, van was originally very dark green almost black, it had a blow over coat of cream paint, wasn't too rusty though.
Thanks Dave,
Looks like an old VW van auction yard as there was another one next to it as well.
How do you find out about these clearance sale events?
How much did the vans sell for?
Cheers,
Scott
There is another 216 panel that has been hacked severely into a camper in Bombaderry on NSW south coast:

Looks a lot like this one:

WOW, How could someone list something like that on Ebay, what a pile of poo.
Dave,
Didnt read who posted it on evil bay.
I looked at this van when it was in QLD - I first thought it was a different van as its now @ your place - but rare anyway. Well whats left anyway.
Who painted it matt black?
"A little dodgy " eh?

Thats really useful info.. thanks
I have sold my restored rolling shell on.. Feel really sad about it as I knew it was a solid unit and I hadn’t seen any others...
I am confident the new owner will complete it to a high standard.. Look forward to seeing it..
