Swivelling front seats?
Aircooled - September 19th, 2012 at 03:05 PM

Hi all, been a while since I posted anything, but browsing through the posts always keeps the heart for VWs warm.

I recall coming across a VW website (UK, I think) some years ago, where they had photos and instructions on how to convert conventional front seats in a VW bus so that they swivelled. The process involved using a wheel hub and brake drum. From memory a steel plate was welded under the seat and the drum bolted to it. The hub was somehow fixed to the body and the brake cable used to release and hold the seat in any rotated position.

Does anyone know the link? I think it would be a good topic for a 'how to'....

Re inventing the wheel is cool but you know that the t-3's had them as an option I'm sure that if you want to put captains chairs in your bus,I'd be starting there. I'm sure starting with a VW factory part would be heaps eaiser for all I know they may go straight in?If not T-3 seat runners into your bus fit factory seats job done!

Our old t3 has the swivel front seats. it is an extra base that goes between the rails and the seat and can be taken in and out as you wish

See my response in the General section. T2 swivels can only be used in the last imported German Kombis ('77-79) as the earlier Aussie ones had steel walls behind the front seats.

Buy the proper mountings.

JustKampers sell these swivel seat mounts brand new - with instructions:

Cant go wrong there unless you have a bay with a bulkhead in which you really have no chance of swivelling without major surgery.

not exactly true .... the backboards behind the driver and passenger front seats can be easily removed on the Australian kombis

Just on the backboards. Do you need to add any stiffeners or a brace anywhere else to compensate for their removal?

I remember that page. It was left unfinished as the writer hadnt found a way to "brake" the seat properly. waste of time.

the proper ones are expensive for a reason
