Very interesting. Can imagine the fun of finding parts for that now!

So if the twin pistons are on one side of the callipers, does the whole calliper float?? (as in a std calliper both pistons centralise to where the disc is).

Wow diddnt know that. Sweden had a lot of swedish only rarities especially for type 3s

no they are true 4 spot calipers 2 pistons a side .
they just have 2 fluid lines going to them .
i have been told availability in sweden is easy as there are plenty of them as well as new ones

So these could also be used on a disc brake type 1?

Hi

They would use the late Type 3 caliper bolt spacing which is wider than a Beetle or early Type 3.

I wonder what sort of rotors they use?

I only found out about these a few weeks ago on shoptalk.

They seem to have a lot stricter brake rules than other markets.

Bugs and I would assume type 3s for the Swedish market had self adjusting rear drums too.

It wasn;t that complex either, same setup as many Jap cars were using in the same era, so beats me why other markets especially the rediculously strict US one didn't get them.

US strict? thats a joke right? California maybe but the rest seem to do what ever they want with no control.

In regards to Owner modifications, yeah they seem to have open slather and can do what they want, but I'm talking about original safety specs.

VW had to come up with a shitload of extra safety features purely for North American market that wasn't used elsewhere.

Can't speak for type 3s, they finished before it really got rediculous but Beetles had to get bigger tail lights and front turn signals, collision reinforcing in the doors, larger and more solid bumpers that were mounted on shock absorbers, heavier duty rear bumper mounts, safer seats, padded horn button etc just for the US market.

interesting, did not know that.

so what was up with the drum brakes though?

It was just VWoA trying to keep cost down.

They were struggling to compete with the American and Japanese car market which were miles ahead in technology by then.
