Help - releasing the bonnet - type 3 '71
Pfeffernuss - February 2nd, 2013 at 11:47 AM

Hi fellas,

I had a numpty at my workshop today, who decided to close my bonnet. The release hadn't been completely secured, and now the bonnet is fully shut. The cable inside the car has no use, dagnammit.

The spare tyre is also in place.

Any hints to release the bonnet???

Your knowledge is greatly appreciated!

I believe the release is inside the glovebox... same as a late beetle..

If the cable is attached to the bonnet release...
I can't remember exactly how to do it..
but I believe You need to hold the cable outer while pulling the inner... just pulling the inner doesn't work...
its one against the other...
from memory...

cheers

LEE

Thanks Lee,

Because we're 3/4 way through this resto, the cable wasn't firmly attached to the latch in the bonnet. One tug and it came right off.

We have the car jacked up, and we are poking the latch mechanism with a broom stick. A calibrated broom stick of course.

Should we be pushing or pulling? Or should we try and thread the cable and do it up...

Thanks, Alex

how did ya do it?

I have thought about fixing an additional cable and release in an emergency spot in case this ever happens.

apparently Porsche boxsters have this.

Im intrigued too! Bad andy had the cable snap on his fasties boot and ended up pulling out the rear left indicator and cutting through the cable housing to access the piece of wire that was still attached.
