Not sure about my Type 3 Heater
Petey - July 16th, 2014 at 02:05 PM

Hi dudes,

I'm not 100 percent about the heater system in my Type 3. I just find it hard to trust and freak out that Carbon Monoxide or something might leak into the car.

I had oil leak all over the heater boxes once and when I tried to test the heater, smoke came into the cabin... I fixed the oil leak but since then they've been closed...

Just wondering what other people's opinions might be.

Thanks,
Pete

If your heater boxes are in good condition, the pipes aren't rusted through, the seal between the box and the pipe is good and the ring gasket seals onto the muffler there is no reason for the gases to enter the vehicle,I have had a lot of VW's over the years and still use the heater in my Ghia with no worries. They are a great heating system and definitely beat freezing to death because you are afraid to use it.

As far as I know everything is in good shape so I might have to get someone to check out the seals. After the oil incident though it's probably never gonna smell right :/

You can seal the joints in the heater boxes with a silicon sealant after giving them a good first, this will stop oil entering the box again as they are only crimped originally. The important one is the joint at the back end of the heater box where it seals on the exhaust tube because if the round gasket leaks due to deterioration of the pipe or gaskets it can enter the heater box.
