Advice on late Type 3 motor
Volkswagen4me - September 18th, 2014 at 03:44 PM

Hi all,
I'm considering buying a 1969 Type 3 fastback (the one with the longer, pointed bonnet) which I've come across. The only thing I'm a little unsure about is the motor - I've attached a picture of it.
Can anyone tell me what I should look out for on the motor, or where there might be any problems or problem areas which could arise in the future?

Much appreciated,
Lincoln

Actually a 1970 model.. released around August 1969. The 1969 model still had short bonnet.

Thanks 1500S, it did have me a little confused when I was told it was from 1969, since I thought the longer-nose model only started coming out in 1970.

Engine is possibly the least of your worries

It is in the car and looks complete and does not look like it has been messed around with.

Check the dipstick for oil level and condition

Look for oil leaks and exhaust leaks

Does it start and idle smoothly? Does it rev up smoothly and come back to an idle?

Check compression even see if you can make it stall by covering the tailpipe usually means a tight motor.

Listen for any loud knocks or clacking noises whilst running can be big or little ends or poorly adjusted tappets!

Good luck!

Cheers

David

PS the grass looks nice and green if they look after their car as much as the lawn you might be onto a winner!

Thanks for the advice David, I'll take it all onboard when I go for the inspection.

Much appreciated!
