Hi, have recently bought a type 3 and suddenly it has stopped working!!
Have figured it is the starter motor. How do I remove this, not very familiar with the old girl yet!
Thanks

Hi Debs,

If you haven't got yourself a manual as yet, removing the starter is pretty simple.

1. Disconnect battery negative lead first.
2. Easier if you can get the car up on jack stands, if not wriggle your way under the car on the right hand side just behind the rear wheel.
3. Take note of where the electrical wires connect to the starter, and disconnect them.
4. There is a bolt and nut that goes through the starter, gear box and the engine crank case, and the other bolt is a stud with a nut on it. The long bolt with the nut is removed through the engine bay, (easier if the aircleaner is removed). Then remove the other nut.
5. Then it's just a matter of gently wriggling the starter away from the gearbox.

Replacement starters are not too expensive, so they are not really worth repairing. Put a little dab of general purpose grease on the spigot end of the starter before putting back in.

Hopefully this helps, but get yourself a good manual, they are really a must!
