Questions for handbrake cable replacement.
DubEnthusiast - October 26th, 2014 at 04:17 PM

So one of my handbrake cables snapped recently, and im on a mission to fix them! Im currently operating on a Type 3 1970 Squareback. I was curious as to how i can reef the end of the cable up through the opening near the handbrake lever. I still have the lever on at the moment and ive tried everything XD. Does anyone have any idea's of how i can get that little bugger through the hole without removing the lever? If not, how does one remove the lever?

P.s. ive googled so much and there is literally no good sources of info that i can find for removing any VW handbrake lever.

Thanks,
Nick

I used a bit of wire in a hook shape to get the front bit of our Beetle cable up, and it was pretty hard to get the threaded straight bit up around the bottom of the lever. Patience got it in the end

Thats what we did! We got the bugger today and boy it was a mission! As you said though, patience and it will happen :P. We used a zip tie in a loop and we got it up through the hole. Are new hand brake cables ment to be smaller/tighter than the oldies? Im assuming the oldies stretch and stuff?

The easiest way is to remove the lever, slip the split ring off the pin, push the pin to one side, slide the lever forward to remove the ratchet off the mounting point, fit 2 new cables as if one is broken the other isn't far behind it and it saves doing it again in a few weeks. Fit the handle back into place making sure that the ratchet engages on the slot, slip the cables into the locating holes making sure to hold the release button and fit the nuts, then adjust the handbrake. Prior to this make sure that you adjust the rear brakes.
