So ive just bought my first type 3 - a '70 notch (28th Oct 1969 it left the factory in w Germany apparently!) its a project.
First issue is to get it going - it tries to fire with brakes fluid sprayed on the carbies but the old owner says the automatic choke blades have been
removed (its not clear why) and its been sat outside for 6 months in all weathers.
I will put new sparks, leads, fuel and oil in but i figure without the choke im gonna struggle in cold wet Perth winter weather
So my question i guess is is it easy to source and fit a new choke - guidence welcome

what nr on carbside ...may have whole one to repl rather than strip and rebuild
or is just the heater coil broke or missing?

I agree a whole choke system rather than recon is probably the way to go, how much would yours cost roughly please?
There are no air filters on it at all (thats how it came) but i doubt that would stop her turning over?
Im getting my mechanic to give it the once over tmw so that should help determine next steps..
get an original STOCK air cleaner and fit that
12 v new chokes are available are they wired up correctly there are several things to check
post up a pic of the throat of your carb....
from your post it reads to me as if the prev owner removed the butterfly.
its on held in by 2 screws which are punched over.
this is meant to stop them falling out and going through the motor.
(had it happen once ..... caused a hell of a banging in the cylinder it went into..)

if the carbs are good other than having the choke butterfy's missing then just replace the missing bits.
if the carbs are leaky, hard to adjust, or have very worn out bits then replace the carbs.
you may have trouble finding just the butterfly's.
maybe someone has some shot carbs somewhere????

After a week in dry storage with general fettling and daily WD40 finally theres life - enough to safely nurse her round the block, exciting times

You don't NEED the chokes in most Australian conditions, may just need to warm up for a minute or two. Auto-chokes can make eng. run too rich if don't open fully (and they often open much too quickly & then cause stalling). I used to de-activate mine. Some carbs have no chokes at all.

If you need parts maybe try Denver - adlbeetle66, he has a pretty good stock of bits and pieces and I seem to remember spotting a couple of 32-34
Posit 2 and 3 carb parts in one of his photos.
We get minus 2-3 degree morning here and I wouldn't be without the chokes.
had a couple of -10 degree mornings here a few weeks back, the frost was an inch thick....................... trust me the choke comes in very handy then

speciality :/
