Difficulty winding window up or down.

I have checked the actual handle and the teeth are good so its not slipping there but I get a loud clicking noise from the mechanism. Are they fixable? Suppose you have to pull it right out to access properly?

Have lubed the old channels as a temp measure, helps until the last 3 inches from full close or open and then I have to help push on the glass.

Any help appreciated.

Hi GTMac,

The same thing happened to mine, not really repairable unless you are a mighty fine welder and have loads of time to file in new teeth. I'd just put a WTB in the parts section and check the teeth on the lifter mechanism before purchase.

Hi Andrew,

In the bottom channel of your window glass is a butterfly or bowtie clip that slides in the channel from side to side as you wind the window up and down, if this has broken or worn out the button on your window regulator slides in the channel a bit like a c o c k in a sock.

You need to remove the window regulator, you can do this by taking out the 4 x 10 mm headed bolts and sliding the arm out of the bottom channel. You can leave the glass in. Rplace the clip and grase it up then reinstall in the reverse to removing the regulator.

I probably have a butterfly clip haning around as pre 67 beetles used the same principle.

hey,
mine was just doing that and i fixed it, it's super smooth now :)
To fix it we greased the hell out of the channels and mechanisms and made sure the channels were hugging the window well (I had to file one of the channel holes horizontally so I could have some adjustment and move the channel in tighter).
We had to take the mechanism out which was a bit scarey but the whole thing took about an hour and now it's great! Pretty fiddley but well worth it...

oh yeah, and my clip was also busted, but I had a good one in the spare notchy.

What type and year model do you have ??

Its a 71. Will take it out and look at all possibilities anyway. Could be warn teeth just at the end because when I silicon lube the channels its really smooth until the last inch winding up and then it starts to click.

could also be the track that attaches to the glass and allows the mechanism to run along the glass to push it up it could be in the wrong spot or worn away or rusted etc etc
