Quiet Mufflers for type three?
Petey - December 6th, 2007 at 10:43 AM

Hi there,

I've been starting to notice that my Squareback is kinda loud, I have a feeling it has a pretty average exhaust system. Does anyone know if you can get a good muffler system to mellow my squarey down a little?
I saw this on the net and it sounded ok but I'm not sure if you can get something so specific over here.

Had very similar exhaust system to that on my Ghia for ages, not what I would have called "quiet" but certainly quieter than the exhaust that is on my car now.

Have a look around over at:

ok cool, thanks!
So do you reckon the two mufflers are quieter? or is it just a performance or show thing?

I went from 2 down to one on the Ghia and the Ghia got louder.

I went to this car show on tuesday night and there was a ghia there. It sounded great and that made me want to chill mine out a bit. I know they are different motors and all but I figure they must be pretty similar. this one had a bit of a whistle to it.

I've got a thunderbird on my square and so long as I keep the car in tune the noise is very sweet (as in not loud, but still volksy :))

I've managed to get a NOS muffler for my notch :) , now I just have to find a 43 mm damper pipe to go with it.

I just went to my local Muffler shop and had a resonator fitted to kermit.
There are baffled hotdogs now that are quieter than the normal.
Dont limit yourself to "Bolt-on"..... you can talk with your local muffler shop and if they are half decent.. they can help you with the right fitment.

i dont know anything about mufflers dad has always fixed that stuff but i know my fasty has extractors on it and she is very loud but you learn to love it, on friday we did an oil change and fiddled a bit with the points and its amazing what such a little bit of work can do to a car she is running perfectly now!!! i love my fasty, she is great on the highway. coffs to penrith is a fairly long trip and i would do it with 2 stops when i did the trip, and not because of the car because of me needing some more coffee and to stretch out a bit. she would have done that trip at least 20 times while i was living in penrith. i could not possibly talk her up as much as i want to, the amount of time shes has saved me from failing assignments by running around to so many different print shops to get the final prints of my photographs, and then the times we were celebrating when we headed straight to the nearest dan murphys to stock up with some well earnt spirits. i love the type 3s, i will definately be the owner of at least 1 for the rest of my life and if the rest of my life works out the way i want it to i will own 3 of them :-D

My early fasty has a tuck away single exhaust setup I bought from ISPWest and it is still loud. Maybe you can look at noise insulation around rear boot....

I think type3's are just loud.

yeay, thanks for all the replies!
I love the sound of volksies don't get me wrong, I just think mine could be a little quieter, I'll check in with a muffler place around here and and see if there's something they can do.
I have a squareback and I've been fitting an amp to it but it but I can't find a good place to put the speakers :) they are just sitting in boxes at the back...
