I'm trying to take an original (but stuffed) exhaust off a type 3 engine but there are 2 dirty big bolts (sleeves I suppose) that hold the upper
heater tubes in to the heater thermostats, at least I'm pretty sure that's what they are.
Any ideas onthe best way to get these undone? They look to be 36mm and are really rusted in pretty solid. I'm thinking heat, oil and a big hammer,
but does anyone know any other tricks I can try?
I'd prefer to get them out without cutting anything off if possible as I have to modify a replacement exhuast to fit and want to have something to go
from.
take the whole muffler off the car and soak the nuts in penetrene for about 2 years then you make have a chance
Thanks for the suggestion How important is this heater bit of the heater
system? The exhuast I've bought to replace the original bypasses these thermostat boxes. Without them the heater looks like it would not work too
well... Kinda like to keep it as original as possible, and it does get a bit cold in the winter too.
yeah the origional design didnt have those extra boxes there for a really cold climate
so you have found a genuine exhaust that will take the upper heater sections ??? i aint seen one for over 15 years
the Type 3 heter can be modified slightly so u will cook in the car
I wish I found a genuine one but no such luck, they have to be out there somewhere though. The one I have looks kinda like a modified bus one, with manifolds that go right from the rear exhaust ports to the muffler. I reckon it would be possibe to modify those connections to link up with the upper heater sections but not sure if it's worth the hassle or not if i can just use some blockoff plates on the heat exchangers.
NO forget about the upper heat boxes
I picked up a genuine VW type 3 exhaust about a month back (only set be back $150) I got lucky.
Hi
Dave must be slipping, Vintage have tubes that let you fit a bay window muffler to a Type 3, these look really nice and I reckon that they would sound
nice as well.

Haha Steve, Dave's not slipping yet. He's got it exactly right. I'll just take the extra boxes off and store them someplace safe and if I track
down an original I'll put em back in.
Thanks for the help.
