clutch cable length Type 3 Vs Type 1
karmann54 - February 6th, 2008 at 02:06 PM

Is the clutch cable in a type 3 the same as a type 1? I am looking at adjusting mine ('72 square) as there is basically no pedal free-play, but there is no adjustment left. Wondering if a type 1 cable has been installed (if they are different).

Thanks, Angus

there is a big difference 2333mm type 3

You can buy a clutch cable shortner..
or You used to be able when all cars had cables...

its just a piece of steel about 3-4 inches long and curved to fit over the cable, and a threaded piece in the centre
so when You turn the knob or grub screw
it shortens the cable by bending it in the centre..

You can also add some flat washers to the end of the cable then put the nut back on... that will give a bit more adjustment...

but if Your cable has run out of adjustment
it either means Your cable has stretched and ready to snap???
or Your clutch is just about worn out...

one of the above will help You until You get a new cable

there are two cables for the type 3s both the same length
but different ends...

u need to replace the outer bowden tube as there no pre tension in it thats why u have no adjustement

The wing nut is at the outer end of the threaded section, not the inner end. So if anything the cable is short, not stretched/too long. I haven't really looked at the bowden tube, but I think I might just replace it and cable and set it up from the start.

yes thats the way set it up from the start

its best to replace the outer every time you replace the clutch cable as they wear on the inside and will cause the cable to wear fail
