some questions on type 3
type3girl - March 10th, 2008 at 07:10 PM

hey i'm a newbie to this forum i've been looking at it for some months now and just registered! yay there's a thread for type 3s! well, i am looking for a first car (going for my licence in a couple of months) and i have been absolutely in love with type 3s for ages now. anyway i thought who better to ask than some type 3 onwers themselves?
- would you recommend type 3s as a good first car?
- how much did you pay for your type 3?
- hows it like with the fuel?

and if there are any type 3s for sale in brizzy let me know!!

thanks for your help

types 3s are a beautiful first car, i drove a 72 fasty as my first car and it was so fun! well it still is my first car... all my friends loved driving in it too, so many memories!
fuel is a tricky question because it varies so much, but i would say they are alright on fuel. they use more than a beetle but less than a kombi.
i have a fasty for sale, its in coffs at the moment but ill probably bring it up after i go down for easter

They're are an awesome first car!
I have a Notchback (not my first car, but still)
They are so easy to drive.. and you can see out of them really well (good for learning how to reverse park!)
Decent fuel economy.. if its tuned right!
Go for it! :tu:

my first car was a Type 3 as well
if your buying one make sure you check out the RUST

there OK on fuel but heavier than a bug so they will use more fuel

hey welcome aboard. good to see another type3'er!!:tu:

my first was a 72 square. cost $1500 and ran like a trooper. had some great times in it.

drove it to Valla and back, Qld and back and numerous numerous trips to central coast in it.

never had any complaints on fuel with it. just keep it tuned and running right and it won't die.

i've also has a notchback on the road and am the proud owner of an early fasty.

type 3's are definately the way to go as far as i'm concerned, so just decide what you want and get into it, you've got dubbers eveyewhere, especially AVD to help out anytime.

cheers

aaron.

Great to hear another type 3 convert is on the way, i've had several (why did i sell the last four? space is the excuse i'm using :)) Apart from the above mentioned issues with rust...be sure to take a magnet and flashlight,a VW friend who is familiar with type 3's is invauable leave nothing overlooked, take a jack, get dirty and underneath, older models pre 66 '67 can be troublesome for parts. solve that and buy two of the same model :) i still drive my '65 square which has it's original dizzy and she cruises at 65 70 mph, use only premium fuel and do your maintenance and servicing when it's due, you will have MANY happy times in a squareback, i'm 6"4 and my lovely woman is 6' we can sleep in back with a double futon matress, Very luxurious. have fun and good luck. my square ran to QLD from sydney with 3 people, about 5 bags of luggage (my mate had an ibiza... not the biggest boot you'll see), skateboards, few pairs of rollerblades, bodyboard and esky. we pretty much filled the back right up and it just cruised the whole way, never held up traffic!

rust will be your biggest issue, so be mindful of that when buying one. good luck, and keep us posted on how you go when looking and buying!
