Hi there,
I have a 72 model type 3 and I'd like to change the steering wheel over to something like the 70 model ones (because they look a bit cooler).
I am aware though that they are a different size. So I'm guessing that I'll have to change over the whole thing, not just the end...
Has anyone tried to do this before?
Does anyone know where i could find the steering setup from a 70 model type 3?
Thanks
Pete
I would talk to the nearest older vw mechanic near you as you may not need to change that much and beetle ones may fit
but wiring to and the ign'n lock setup may be a challenge.
or pm davidmaleny on here
Hi
I have a late type 3 steering wheel in My 68 beetle..
it was the same splines
so Your 73 type 3 [steering wheel I have in My beetle]
splines will be the same as the beetles..
so the early wheels should fit straight on...
straight horn bar or "U" shaped horn bar...
your choice...
the beetles splines changed around 1975
I know the 1976 beetle splines were the same as the Golf splines..
but I do believe all the type 3s had the same steering wheel splines...
if I'm wrong someone will correct Me...
cheers

there was a spline change in late 73 so the older 2 spoke steering wheels will fit but u wont be able to turn it
the spokes will hit the wiper switch
u would have to get a complete column from a pre 71 without the wiper switch and mount a wiper switch on the dash
Thanks guys,
Yeah I tried one on but it wouldn't turn. I think there was also something different with the way the electrics for the horn worked, so yeah i think,
i'd need to get the whole thing, which would be a bit of a mission...
I've found many aftermarket wooden steering wheels
have the same problem...
the bosses need an adaptor to fit them..
Nothing is impossible...
Just a darn site Harder.... lol..
