Hi type3ers, the existing standard exhaust on my 72 notch is quite badly in need of replacement (noisy and leaky), I want to keep a standard setup (including heating) as I actually use it (keeps my kids warm on the way to school while I look cool!). Most of the setups I've looked at in classic and vintage vee dub seem use extractors that use j pipes which circumvent the heating? I was wondering whether anyone knew of a good exhaust place that could custom make or fit a setup that would retain the heater pipes etc? Boris at vintage vee dub mentioned Westside Mufflers at Padstow and said the owner had a type 3 in the past.

ps new to the type 3 experience so my understanding of this may be flawed and you may be able to buy a quality standard exhaust off the shelf (don't want a crap chinese one)!

I have extractors on mine and the heating works fine. You need some larger tubing to replace the factory tubing for the heater bits.

Origional Type 3 mufflers are hard to find so most type 3's get by on the extractor set up.
The tubing you need is of about 2inches in diameter and made from flexible foil. (excuse my lack of technical expertise in the description!).
It is used somewhere on Valiant Hemi engines I think so it should be available from any VW workshop etc.

I'll try and post up a pic of what I have on my car to give you a better idea (when the weather improves and daylight comes about).

dude you are a few weeks too late!! i had a type3 exhust system in my collection of parts but sold recently!!

Most of the extractor systems will work with the heaters. You will loose the upper heat exchangers (the little ones off cylinders 2 and 4), but the lower ones remain.

You will just need some hose to connect the fan outlets to the lower heat exchangers. I used something called FRS ducting in 57mm diamter. It is a rubber impregnated fabric wrapped around a spring steel wire helix. I bought it from HIS Hose, but you can probably get it from most industrial hose suppliers. It is really flexible which is necessary as you will need to bend it almost back on itself to fit. My first pair lasted ~5 years before they started to burn through where they come close to the exhaust. I also tried the aluminium foil type of duct - lasted about a week, and the papery type of one which was impossible to bend sharply enough to fit.
