hey guys im so close to joining you guys in interms of owning a type 3... the only thing is that its in melbourne i cant physicaly see it, its out of rego and needs a rwc. i know someone down there who can check it out for me but the thing is that im planning on getting it regoed in melbouren and driving it back to sydney as i will save interms of shipping.... first of all is this a good idea? or should i friehgt it and plus what should i ask this person to look out for before i seal the deal?

You can get a permit to drive an unregistered vehicle which is probably the way to go. I bought a ghia from newcastle and drove it home to brisbane that way years ago. I assume Victoria would have a similar system. My permit was issued by NSW roads or whatever they are called and specified where I was driving from and to on what days. I didn't need another once I got back to Qld, it covered the entire trip. It still needs a RWC to get the permit.

You obviously need to be sure the car will make the trip as well. I knew the ghia reasonably well, and just got the mechanic doing the RWC to give it a service.

man there's a lot of hiding places for rust in type 3's, like any car i suppose. best thing is just to get your mate to look at the most common places and get him to let you know.

If you live in Sydney and plan on staying there you would have to have it re registered in NSW anyway. Is your mate going to look after getting all the roadworthy work done and then get it rego'd?

I would say it's cheaper and easier to freight it to Sydney and then go about the business of getting it roadworthy and registered.

If your mate does not know type 3's he's wasting his time. Where abouts in Melbourne is the car located? Perhaps a near by dubber who knows what they are looking for can help out by taking a look.

It seems pretty cool but I reckon you'd be better off finding one in sydney. That way you can suss it out a bit better before you actually buy it. Also it might be good to get to know the car a bit before you take it on a big drive (you know, to iron out the quirks)
Good idea getting a type 3 though, they're great and really easy/fun to drive
