Neville the Notch
Fatso - June 3rd, 2008 at 06:40 PM

I've gotten my '72 notch started, he hasn't run for a few years from what I understand.

He's running a bit rough (understandably), not really idling and seems to be missing on at least one cylinder. The first thing I'm going to do is change spark plugs & leads, check the points gap.

Is there anything in particular that I should look at as well that will help him run a bit smoother?

Valve clearances, valve clearances and in particular valve clearances.

So I take it maybe valve clearances ;)

I've replaced the fuel lines as they were perished, which probably weren't helping, seems to be running better now. There a bit of an issue with the throttle cable which was sticking a bit.

I'll see to the valve clearances when I have it in the new garage and I'm not working in the street. At least I know what I'm doing with my weekends for a while.

Got the valve clearances done, the engines not sounding too bad now, big improvements there. I picked up John Muir's book for my birthday a couple of weeks ago, so that helps a bit. The learning curve is steep but fun.

I have one interesting issue though, the front drivers side suspension can be pushed down and lifted and it either stays down or up like the torsion bar isn't returning it to the centre. I can't see an issue on the outside visible stuff so I was thinking it maybe a broken torsion bar or something stripped, does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be likely?

Hey Fatso, check the shocks and pump some grease in to the front end. There should be two nipples each side. Good luck
Neil

I'll give it a shot with the grease gun otherwise I suppose I'm going to have to get all intimate with the front end.

I think I need to reroute the throttle cable as it seems to foul a bit on the tin where it comes into the engine bay (which is a bit loose) but I think I might change it as well for peace of mind too along with the remaining bits of old fuel line.

I think it's still a while until I get him back on the road but after I get the front suspension sorted and a new exhaust I think the rest shouldn't be too hard (touch wood) then I can get him on the road and then tart him up a bit.

The Fatso badge sounds cool :smirk:

Man, I owe you a beer. I pumped it full of grease, got him down of the axle stands and he bounces in the front end again the way he should.

Had me doing the little victory dance in the garage
