well i'm still on the lookout for an auto type 3 as my first car. i was browsing ebay and i found what looks like exactly what i'm looking for and close to where i live (auto fastback). but the guy has set the starting bid at $9000 which is way overpriced for the car and is a huge bummer to me! should i try and contact the guy and tell him that i'm interested in the car but for a more resonable price? because i'm pretty sure no one is going to bid on it at that price! here's the link- http://cgi.ebay.com.au/VW-KOMBI-COUSIN-FASTBACK-NEEDS-HOME_W0QQitemZ260254274...
I believe due to its original condition and low mileage the seller believes he can get that amount for it.
As my Grandpa alaways said 'its only worth what someone is willing to pay'.
It will be interesting to see if it sells for that price
Hi
that is one nice looking Fastback...
but not worth anything like that amount of money..
PLUS He says He just bought it...??
so, He's just trying to make a quick Large profit...
Offer what you think
Just send Him an email via "Ask seller a question"
It may be the best looking type 3 fastback about
but as the owner probably doesn't know the history of the car...
plus it does need some things doing to it
and the spare tyre wants throwing away...
If No one else wants it...
and possibly no one will pay that amount of money
Best of luck

clearly the owner is on crack
shark nose fastys are probably the least desriable of the lot
which is shame cos there nice to drive
its realistically not worth anymore than $3k but this idiot obvioulsy thinks that cos kombis are getting bullshit prices that they dont deserve then
type3s are next LOL
like most vws its age the odometer would be on atleast its 2nd time around
keep looking auto fastys are normally dirt cheap cos not many ppl want them
u often see decent ones go on ebay sub $1k
If you contact him ask about the seat runners (original) and welded floor and the two coloured plug leads. See if he has the original correct rims as well.
If He knew what He was doing..??
He would have replaced the 5 spark plug dizzy leads..
speedo has most probably gone past 100,000 miles
although We will never know..
a lot of wires hanging under the dash??
engine isn't even clean...
it could have been a daily driver..??
who never used the boot..
$3000 is usually tops for a type 3 in normal condition..
fastbacks are fairly rare...
not everyone likes the look...
If You bought this for $3000
You could have to spend $1000 on mechanical parts
CV Joints- tie rod ends - ball joints etc..
brakes...
For the price this goose wants, You would want the receipts for all the work done...
He may have bought it for $1000...???
cheers
best of luck

For that price you would expect original owners manual, dealer invoice and NO receipts... because the car would be in pristine original un-worked-on condition
i'm also of the opinion he's on crack!
not worth 9k, or close to it.
Tell him " He's Dreamin"
Tazz
that's the long and short of it!!
I own a 71 Fasty and still would not call myself an expert, but am I missing something as this car seems strange. I dont know any 71 models that have the airvents above the 1/4 window missing or have the fully sloping rear parcel tray? Thought these were characteristics of the slope nose model or is it an early 71? Seems strange detail like that would change mid year.
i would love it if my fasty would get 9 grand! that would be flipping sweet
Wow - that crack must be pretty high quality - the starting bid has been upped to $9500 !!!
i know of a notch 71 in better condition more original low kms etc etc that sold for around $6gs so hang in there youlll find one my price guide $3000- $6500

sent him a message regarding the price and he said "he is falling more and more in love with it every day" and will "keep her if she doesn't sell for the price listed on ebay." seems like a lost cause. if only...! oh well
nice sales technique....
keep looking there are nice type 3's out there they'll come up
Serious loon. imagine paying $9500, you would wake up with one hell of a headache the next day
There is/was a fasty on carsales or drive in a showroom for $9k, but it looked like it was worth it.
9k for a type3 is definately reachable but has to be damn schmick...
should someone tell him he's got a screw loose??
This is more like it.

It must go quicker cos it's red!!
$8k would be reasonable for an early model but 70's models are so unpredictable with pricing that it is hard to justify that kind of dough. You can
still get them in complete condition for $500+ Type 3's are kinda schitzophrenic in pricing structure as they are not as common as beetles and
kombis in the marketplace to get a general ball park figure. Personally I'd pay $5k for an early fastback and halve that for one from the 70's in
same condition.
Theres my 2 cents worth.

that's actually a really nice fasty.
but not sure if i's spend 11k on it... but that's me.
Adam, i don't think you are too far off the mar. for me, anything over 5k in a type 3 has to be able to show why and i'd expect a dman nice one at
that.
Hey
I bought a 73 auto fastback for 1000 bucks on ebay.
currently restoring body, painting original "gemini blue" , with and empi 8 spoke rims.
including lowered front and new interoir im aiming to hav total cost under 4k- doing most myself
long story short - keep looking
