Hi there,
I was driving to work today and my squareback started randomly beeping (little miss sunshine style). It has done it a few times when I'd start the
car but never just as driving. Is this a common thing?

I think it is a horn ring / contact issue, try taking the steering wheel off and checking for free movement of all parts etc. Good luck.
Yes,
Once You turn the ignition on..
Power is connected to the horn..
the horn is then earthed out once you press the horn ring..
there is a wire that goes from the horn/steering wheel centre down thru the steering tube to an earth at the rubber steering connector..
take off the horn centre and check to see where its shorting out.. bare wire..
or the copper ring under the steering wheel may be worn out and part of it is sticking out and earthing out now & then..

You're not being stalked by a white beetle No53 are you?
Thanks, I'll have a look, I wasn't doing it on the way home from work so it's a pretty random thing...
I had the same thing with my 70 bug once, and the wiring for the horn and everything checked out OK.
Had me stumped for a while until I noticed a slight "ting" sound just as the horn was beginning to beep... what was happening was if I was hooking
through a sharp right hander the club-lock key on my key ring would swing across and tap the (metal) steering wheel boss, completing the circuit and
getting a tiny beep out of the horn.
Man was I glad when I fiigured that one out !!!

An electrical issue causing random beeping ... i'll have to remember that one for my next adventure into peak hour traffic !! lol
I have the same problem, only it's the missing spring inside the horn button. I now drive with the horn disconnected.
