Hey ive just recently started resto on a notch and a square. on the notch there are random circles on both the rear guards that are covered up. does anyone know what they are and what they do?. they look as if they should be open for more air flow.

I've never seen that before that I know of. What year is it?

im pretty sure its a 72' . it looks like it should be open as it connects directly to the fed air flow that goes back into the engine.
maybe its used to keep the cooler air from being released. but then there is nowhere for the air to go that is let in by the rear guard vents.

Its the flux capacitor. Very important to not disturb it.

If it's a late model type 3 that explains why I have never seen it.
Looking at the rest of the sheetmetal around it, it could be an emergency rust repair section?

A flux capacitor is the thing controlled by the 2 levers beside the handbrake on a 12V beetle.... I didn't know Type3's had them fitted ???

lol. oh thats just the start of it.
its been sitting in a paddock for around 2 years and me and my dad have just stripped it all down and theres so much rust. .
just got a 70 squareback though and theres hardly anything wrong with it.

oh ok. ive only just got into this sort of stuff. (restoring) and dont know much about the cars.

Actually, in all seriousness it's probably just due to how the body is put together.

I've seen similar sorts of things on other cars, where there was a hole in the stamping to allow access for the (spot)welding robot's... maybe on a Notch it's for to get access for attaching the rear panel (just a guess)... and the cover plate would then be to stop air coming out of the hole.

There are no air vents on the rear guards of notchbacks ... the intake is under the rear windscreen. Will check some parts book to see if the rear body stamping is different between notchbacks and squares, cheers.
