Looking to buy my first KG.
TCR7 - January 11th, 2010 at 07:12 PM

Hey guys,

Been a VW fan since my first car, a Manx buggy, which was closely followed by a kit car built on a Type 3 floorpan and running gear.

Always liked the lines of the KG and swore that one day I'd own one, well it might be time.

Probably wouldn't be into a full resto to original specs but more of a clean weekend cruiser. More of a rod look, but not as far as the rat rod look. Matt/gloss black, lowered, 15" Porsche Fuchs wheels.

Anyway, I'd like to have a look at this car, any advice on what to look for apart from the usual rust? Where does the rust usually appear, floor pan, sills? Where are the VIN numbers on the KGs?

Paul.

rust is usually found all around the car in the lower 100/150mm of the body so check it all around. The battery tray area as well as around the brake fluid reservoir and even around the nostrils at the front.

Hey TCR7
I put a deposit on that KG today mate.Sorry dude

TCR7 - January 11th, 2010 at 08:27 PM

Oh well, I guess I'll keep looking.

What was the car like anyway?

Wannavee - January 11th, 2010 at 08:44 PM

Dunno mate, havent seen it in the flesh!
Just bought it coz it is what I'm after. Bit stupid buying like that but sometimes ya just gotta take a punt.

I test drove a KG Razor on the weekend here in Adelaide if ya want something like that?
It drove real nice with only the passenger door had some pretty bad rust. The rest of the car was very good and it drove like a new car.
Owner won't budge from 13grand though. Nice honest bloke and won't tell you crap. He pointed out any problems to me
Its the white one on Carsales.com
Let me know if you want his number

Wannavee, you're a wild man! I can see why you would put a deposit on without looking though, it's so cheap! I don't think I've ever seen a Type 1 Karmann Ghia with an asking price of less than $12,000.

Hey Wannavee....ballsy move mate!!

Hope it works out for you.

It does look like a nice car though, from the pictures anyway.

Well done, and all the best with it....are you driving it back home (ROAD TRIP!!!!) or trucking it?

Scarab (aka: Paul)

Thanks Steve, but I'm not really looking to do a full resto at this stage. If I'm going to buy one, I want one that's in "reasonable" condition and near enough to roadworthy to begin with, so I can just tidy it up and enjoy it for a while. Then one day when I have the spare time I may take it off the road for a resto.

Paul.

Already been played with so nothing to lose, looks to have front beam adjusters already fitted.

Congratulations Wannavee,

To help get the project started, I've got an old KG wheel that you can have for free, just pay for the post.
