Thinking of restoring my grandfathers fastback.
M1CAH - April 7th, 2010 at 10:07 AM

Hey guys, my name i Micah and i'm new to the forum.

Im in the position to restore my grandfathers type 3 as i thought it would be a nice weekender.

It's a '71 fastback. Not sure of the condition as it is in S.A and i'm in Melbourne. I haven't seen it for years.

I know that the later type 3's aren't worth as much but its more of a sentimental build.

Anyway, i am just after some advice......do's and dont's, availability on parts and what not.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

-Micah

Welcome along, you'll find a warm home here...
I've been lurking around this forum for too many years to remember and although I say this every year....I must, at some stage, resto my Notch.

Other people can correct me if I'm wrong but....

Simply start with the basics, I'm talking Rego stuff, if you neede parts like I did, Classic Veedub have been great!

On the contrary, they're consistently loved by the larger Vw community, those who've driven them have only kind words to say. I've grown to love my Long-nosed '72 model!

They look great lowered...

Go for it and save as many as Type 3s as we can! It was good to see: And here's an Early resto...

That one was saved from AP Spares at Riverstone by me around 1996. With the new laws now it would have been scrapped as it was found to be a write-off when I went to get it registered. Had to get a letter stating what had been repaired from the write-off record by a licensed repairer. It suffered a hit on driver's door and B pillar but never hurt the floor. As can be seen there were issues with previous repairs before I had it but some at the time was best left as was. I was surprised to see the damage around the rear window as that was all clean when I had it. No doubt the person I sold it to in 2000 had it out in the wet with a leaky seal for quite some time!

Just some history on it........ the interior had dash and door cards/armrests from a 1963 wreck in Deloraine in Tas. The rear seat with centre armrest came in from Type 3 Detectives, UK............ all this to make me feel that the 69 was a 1500S!!
