Pictures needed of 73 Gauges
electricmonk - April 28th, 2010 at 04:40 PM
Hi all. I am after pictures of the gauges for a 73 Type 3. I think the ones I have are incorrect
Thanks
68AutoBug - April 28th, 2010 at 06:27 PM
they are black gauges...
much different to early type 3s..

I sold my '73 Type 3 last week! I can't take any new photos but here's the best photo of the dash that I've got.
Some details to help you with the ID:
Black-faced 110mph speedo in the centre, with the numerals of the speed increments printed on the inside of the lens and the straight lines printed on
the face. Left and right indicator warning lights inside the speedo.
The clock and fuel gauge also have the numerals printed inside the lens. The fuel gauge contains the generator and oil pressure warning lights.

Sorry I should have said I was aware of the style used for the late gauges and that Aussie Gauges were different from elsewhere. So as I understand it
there were no brake warning lights on the 73 dash? My speedo goes to 220kph, has the indicator light and the lights for the headlight setting
(Parker/High beam). Speed numerals and lines printed on the gauge not the plastic. I am a little bemused as the shroud seems to just be covering the
numerals. The housing is the type three style and the part number starts with 311. Perhaps someone has changed the internals at some stage. I have a
speedo out of a bus that is in kph and has a working trip meter that I was going to adapt but would need a black style fuel gauge set up like the
early ones with the indicator markers in it.
Just quickly when you parked yours and forgot to turn off the indicator did the tail and park lamps for the same side illuminate when you turned the
car off?
waveman1500 - April 29th, 2010 at 08:46 PM
Electricmonk, very odd that you've got a kph speedo in yours, and even stranger that it goes up to 220km/h! That's quite a lot faster than a stock
Type 3 could manage. I put a km/h speedo in my Superbug which only goes up to 160km/h, I've never seen a stock aircooled VW speedo which goes higher
than that.
First of all, no, the Australian delivered cars never had brake warning lights as far as I'm aware, and my '73 Type 3 certainly didn't. But the
parking lights did light up on one side if you left the indicator stalk down when you turned off the car. I can only assume that this is a safety
feature for leaving your car parked on a dark road at night, without having to run all four park lights and drain the battery. Hope that helps!

thats really wierd for an aus car to have the euro sidemarker economy parking lights working
unless a PO has hooked it up just for laughs
i imagine most type3s have the provisions for it as even L and S bugs have the special terminal on the ignition switch and wires on the indicator
switch for it even though in aus they never had sidemarkers
VW-VARIANT-L - April 29th, 2010 at 11:24 PM
Definitely not an original type 3 gauge, as they only had numerals up to 160 KPH or 110 MPH, someone's gone to alot of trouble .... please post a
pic
Late face gauges aren't too hard to find, you would be better off selling the bus kph trip speedo and buying an original type 3 speedo ( and you'll
have plenty of $$$$ left).
According to the glovebox manuals, the dual circuit brake warning light was an optional extra, but I've never seen one installed. The warning light
is fitted between the speedo and clock on the dash, but your car will probably have a plastic blanking plug there.
On 1973 models they left off the sidemarker lenses, and used the parking lights on one side only according to the indicator arm position with the
ignition off. Earlier cars had sidemarkers, no reason why they shouldn't still be working on any car in Australia if properly maintained ( needed to
fix mine to get a RWC )

Hi
I had a 1971 type 3 variant back in the 70's and it had the side parking lights which I used..
Cars in some parts of Europe [Germany?] had these lights which they had to use if parked on the side of a road.
Mercedes used the tail/parkers on either side..
I had these hooked up on a 1302S I also had during the 70's..

Ok here is a picture:
I know that the tach is not genuine as I gutted the old clock housing (Had no internals) and made it fit.
My 72 has the side markers as well, but not on the 73. Also the rear ashtrays are a different size and the seats are a three point mount instead of
the rails. Why the hell you would do those sort of changes for one year beats me.
It wasn't hard to get the side markers working, the previous owner had botched the wiring. It was harder trying to find good lenses for them. I opted
the easy route at the time and put in 92 magna side markers and they looked quite good to me
waveman1500 - April 30th, 2010 at 09:55 AM
Very interesting. That looks like a 110mph Type 3 speedo but someone has custom-printed the km/h markings on it, and hence presumably modified the
speedo gears to make it read right.
megalania - April 30th, 2010 at 11:08 AM
Those side markers don't really look OG, I might be wrong tho

If its just had the numbers re printed to be km/h instead of mp/h, there may be no need to change the speedo gears, its no different to the stickers
providing they go on in the right place

they have just doubled the MPH numbers ( ie 20 instead of 10 MPH, 120 at the 60MPH mark etc ), I doubt the speedo has been calibrated very
accurately.
out of interest, this is also why the KPH and MPH clear plastic faces are not interchangeable as the line markings are in different positions ( often
see this suggested when people are selling cracked KPH speedos)

Think you will find that if you have them hooked up as parkers they need the rear red/front clear lense. Many of the OZ ones were converted to side
indicators with the amber lenses. Side parkers was a European requirement only.
Also, for whatever reason the 69 and 70 models with hazard lights required them to be disconnected by the dealer before delivery (This isn't hearsay!
It is actual fact from the time at Lennox Motors, Blacktown, NSW)

Type 3 speedos don't use gears to drive the indicator needle. Just magnetism! The only gears in there drive the odometer.

If that is the case and the speedo hasn't been calibrated correctly then the indicated speeds would be way out! 50mph is nearly exactly 80kph, but
they've reprinted it as 100kph! Does it seem to be that far out? Have you checked it with a GPS or some similar method?
electricmonk - May 1st, 2010 at 11:06 AM
It is reasonably accurate as far as I know, certainly no where near 20kph out. Driving at the speed limit I have never been flashed by speed cameras
or by mobile speed traps and there are at least five between home and work. Don't have or want GPS at the moment so cant check with that

Of course you would never be flashed by a speed camera, because you would be going so slowly! Think about it, if they have printed 100km/h at the
actual speed of 80kph, then you are driving 20km/h slower than you think. Get someone you know with a modern car to drive in front of you at an exact
speed, eg. 60kph and then follow them whilst maintaining a steady distance, if your speedo reads 60 then you're fine. If it reads 70 or 80 then think
about getting a new lens with the proper mph markings! Also, it's worth keeping in mind that your odometer is most likely still in miles, for service
intervals, etc.
electricmonk - May 1st, 2010 at 05:57 PM
I am usually cursing the bozos doing 50 in the 60 zone and keep up with the flowing traffic at 60. Wife in her y said I was doing roughly 60 against
her speedo on the way home one after a break down one night. Her car is a VY Commodore. LOL and yes I should have been able to compute simple maths
like that but I blame just coming off of night shift...you believe me don't you?
I should check the odometer out. I know it is 36km to work so should keep an eye on it one day
electricmonk - May 1st, 2010 at 06:03 PM
Would a Kombi speedo be set up the same as a Type3? eg would it read the same?
1500S - May 2nd, 2010 at 08:07 PM
If the Kombi speedo is driven the same way, that is by the cable from the front left wheel and the tyre is the same rolling radius as the Type 3 it
should work. Be inquisitive! Pull a speedo apart and see how they work. A Type 3 speedo was always known to be inaccurate after a bit of use.
When the magnet spindle wears the bearing housing which is just die cast alloy, the magnet can ride too close to the drum which is attached to the
needle and make it read fast. How do you think so many could get a standard Type 3 to near 100 mph!!

Does any one have late gauges like this? I am after a fuel gauge as i quite like the later gauges.
electricmonk - August 5th, 2010 at 02:28 PM
Just an FYI, checked the speedo at 40, 60 and 80 with gps and all was spot on. So whoever did it did the job properly.
scot70wagon - September 5th, 2010 at 08:17 PM
i have a full set of guages. speedo(mph), fuel, factory tacho, clock. i know thats 4 guages but i believe you use either the factory tacho or clock.
